Plastic jacket for knight bighorn breech
« on: September 22, 2020, 09:20:31 AM »
So i currently own a knight bighorn .50. It is currently setup for no. 11 musket caps. Next year as its to close to season opener I would like to switch to 209 ignition. I'm not sure i understand if I need to use the plastic jacket for the 209 primer or can I put the primer on the  nipple bare? I'm just wondering if I can avoid the jacket.  The knight website has the breech plug for 209 but doesn't really say if you go bare unless im missing it.

Thanks for the help.

You do haver to change your breech plug to a FPJ Breech Plug.  Knight use to offer a bare 209 primer breech plug, but because of liabilities associated with shooting bare primer in a gun designed with a percussion hammer they will not sell them any longer.  You might also need to purchase a different hammer unless your current hammer has 209 on the face of the hammer.

Another thought, I really can't tell if you are shooting a #11 cap or a mucket cap from your note.  But if you are shooting Musket caps I would really suggest you switch to a #11 Magnum cap shooting T7.   Musket caps on the market today are all switching back to "re-enactment caps" they are not as hot as the older hunting musket caps.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

There have been problems (?) with the plunger guns using the bare primer setup.  I think it was sending primer debris out of the breach.  Not a good thing only a few inches from your face.

I shoot full sized musket caps in mine, not #11's. Works fine but I use the RWS caps(musket). I have both the red holders for the 209s ant the breech plug for them and the magnetic breech plug for 209s but have never used them.

I can not longer find RWS Musket caps online anymore.  The 1081's that are now offered are for Re-enactment..

The Musket caps you have are listed a 1081 FL without the top hat design.  The new ones are listed as 1081 and are the top het variety.

My biggest problem was the crud ring with the T7. I understand the primer was too hot. I switched to Pyrodex select and cured the problem. I just liked the larger musket caps cause I have fat fingers and end up using them on occasion to recap the gun.

Good deal I couldn't find any the other day when I was looking... Looks like the minimum order there is  1000 caps though.
