Idaho Palouse unit 8 or other unit advice..
« on: September 28, 2020, 10:24:31 PM »
I have a deer tag left over from my Idaho elk hunt.  Was eyeing unit 8. But open to options. I’m a Washington resident so prefer something near the Washington border,   Any good advice.. ? might trade for good Idaho elk intel....   thanks in advance. Kevin

You should also think about Unit 8A, at least where there are open areas adjacent to forest.  But really, there are whitetailed deer everywhere.  Mule deer, not so much, unless you are in the private lands along the Clearwater River east of Lewiston.  There are state (IDL) and federal (St. Joe NF) lands in the northern and eastern parts of 8, and they do hold deer (mostly whitetail, in my experience).

Where are you coming from?

you know if any of the Potlatch Timber Co lands are still open to the public? Used to hunt a lot of that stuff in 8A but its been a hot minute since I've been up north in that country.

As Naches has said, Potlatch (now Potlatch-Deltic) lands are open- I recommend a glance at their access agreement here:
https://idfg.idaho.gov/sites/default/files/access-potlatchdeltic-agreement.pdf

Another major landowner to consider is Bennett Lumber Products Inc.  However, it seems this year they are not issuing hunting access permits due to the Covid-19 situation.  Their recreation site is here:

Appreciate the intel guys. That used to be some real fun country to hunt but its been a solid 15 years since I've been over there. One of these days I'm gonna shelf idaho mule deer for a bit and really try for one of those skanky chocolate antlered timber rats

Ouch!  Somebody find me the burn cream.   :chuckle:  Those timber rats can put on some good antler and venison.  I think the real field for comparison might be the dinner table...   :cue: :peep:

Let me know when you come over to this neck of the woods for your whitetail hunt!

I spent 9 days in 8A during archery elk and saw/jumped plenty of whitetails on NF land
