Chiliwist - Buck Deer modern
« on: October 01, 2020, 08:45:07 PM »
I ended up getting drawing for the modern Chiliwist whitetail tag during the first couple weeks of Nov.  I'm a little familiar with the Pateros & French Creek area.  French Creek has some DNR land and a good portion is private.  Been doing a little research and reading here on the site and it sounds like a decent area could be Benson Creek on the west side of the GMU.  Pretty decent amount of public land. Benson Creek a good place to start?

Is it worth the effort to try and ask for access to any of the Gamble land?

Thanks.

Cover lots of ground is the best advice I can give you. Had the tag in 2014 and saw 50 mule deer for every whitetail we saw. Only saw 4 whitetails during my hunt. If you have a week, make sure and go the last week. I didn’t start hunting until the 12th. My buck had just checked his scrape line and then was heading to take a doe away from a small buck. 60 yard shot and he had no idea I was there.

I wouldn't waste your time around French Creek. I think I've seen 3 whitetail doe total off of French Creek since the fire. Talk to the locals and they'll say the wolves have decimated them along the Methow River. The Gebbers won't let you on the Gamble land unless you've got some powerful friends or go way back with Cass and have his direct number.

PM me and I can point you some extra places to scout.

I had the tag the year of the fire. Sections of the unit looked like the moon. Couldn't get permission on any private, so stuck with public land. Got lucky on the last morning of my hunt, a dink buck compared to stickbuck's!

 Got permission when I was falling for Gebbers,  after sale was over, couldn't get another.   He found west side "clubs" paid better!!

Claim what you want, but the Gebbers have never leased any of their land to a westside club.

:yeah:

They allow some local Omak/Brewster outfits on their land that abuts ours, but I've never heard of or met a West side guide running an outfit on Gebber land in my 20 years of hunting. I've met plenty of trespassers from all parts of the state on Gebber land though.

I’d look on the east side of the unit I’ve never scene a buck like Stickbuck but have scene enough around the chilliwist butte area.

Thanks for the input guys. i think I'll be concentrating around the Benson Creek area and see what I can find on the eastside of the unit.  I'd kind of figure more whitetails on the eastside, down by the fields.  There spotted amount of public land around there, but not all looks accessible.

Thanks stickbuck, I will.  But probably stick mostly lower elevation areas I'd imagine?

I do plan on being there the last week.  Kind of sucks that the last day of the hunt is on a Friday.....
