Wood ducks Vancouver lake?
« on: October 01, 2020, 09:32:22 PM »
My friend and I have a goal to both shoot a wood duck this year. I've done the research and found spots far from home and at the Ridgefield wildlife refuge. But I can't always go to both thoughs spots. I'm wondering if anyone has ever scene any at Vancouver lake sense I can't go there often. I also heard wood ducks love acorns. Never paid attention to the trees at Vancouver lake but has anyone happened to see any oak trees there?

I have not personally noticed much oak trees down there. It has been my primary area over the last 8 years or so. I have seen wood ducks there and know of a couple people who have bagged one or two. The bulk of the birds shot down there in my own experience are around the edges of the lake. Only when you get more water and flooded areas is there more marshy areas. And those are the places that I see them most often. I have seen half a dozen over the years, always as a single or a hen/drake pair. They are there, just never seen any with any reliability or numbers. I have never had them come into decoys there, not saying they wont, I just havent had it happen. The ones I see are almost always as I am working into a new spot during the day that is flooded areas.

I shot one there years ago and got it mounted. I have yet to see another. Never seen one at Ridgefield, but you never know!

In the great spirit of hunting, want to trade a great wood duck spot for one of your duck or geese spots? Always looking for a backup to a backup. You’ll need a boat for my spot. I have a few mounts if you want to see them from the area. Pm me if interested.

I'm afraid I don't know much spots or at least any super good ones that aren't popular. This is only my second season of hunting .

Used to be lots of wood ducks down their.  I had 20 wood duck boxes that I put up down there.  I used to check and clean them out every year.  Most boxes would be full each year with 10-15 eggs per box.

Did you give the locations to the local Washington Waterfowl Association  chapter for maintenance when you moved north?
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

No, I didn't.  I would have to go and see how many are still standing.  I built them all out of T1-11.
