Stove pipes?
« on: October 12, 2020, 10:10:05 AM »
Question for a wall tent stove if it’s cold out say in November and your stove pipe goes straight up outta the tent in the afternoons and night when pressure and cold air push down will it push smoke back down the pipe into your tent?

The only time I have had smoke come back into my tent is when it is really windy or if the pipe is getting full of soot.  I have to clean my pipe every four days or so.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

No. The draft of the fire will push the smoke up the chimney. If you’re getting smoke in the tent it’s because you don’t have enough draft. Give it more air to get going & don’t run too short of a chimney. A taller chimney helps with the draft because the top of it is colder compared to the stove & hot goes to cold.

A good rule of thumb is to use two 5' sections of pipe straight up.

Install a damper in your pipe too.

Best advice I ever received on tent stove pipes came from this forum. Install a "China mans hat" rotating cap! Made all the difference on getting smoke in tent in high pressure wind!

The rotating cap is actually called a Roman Cap because of the blade that looks like a Legionaries' helmet. The China cap is fixed and looks like the cone shaped hat ( coolie hat ) from the Orient. And the only reason I know is that I know a guy who's great Grandfather invented it.  :twocents:
