Awesome bull. I’m sure you passed him the first day because you wanted your epic hunt to be Longer. He’s a dandy glad you didn’t wait any longer because I’m sure the next guy to see him would not have taken a second look

Great Bull!  I am going to go with some of the other comments though... I don't know if I would have had the stones to pass on him first day.
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

So, finally home and half done butchering. A little longer version of the story. I scouted 4 - 3day weekends learning the area and gleaning what info I could. I had three things I was looking for: a good story, at least 40", and good fronts. I also heard almost everyone's advice of don't shoot the first bull you see.
I had about 15 different places lined up I wanted to call/hunt but had a particular area I was going to concentrate on. Opening moring we hit my #1 area and called from a couple different locations, had one grunt at me but didn't see anything. On the way out at 1030 in the morning we round a corner and this guy is standing broadside, uphill, 82yds away. We watched him for 15 minutes as I went back and forth of should I shoot? But I'm not ready to shoot. But, he's a nice bull. But, he's the first one I've seen. But, he looks really good. But, I don't want to yet. Then why did you even pack your gun. But, it would be an easy pack. Maybe there's a bigger one. But, damn he's a nice looking bull. Finally he walked up and off over a small ridge settling the interal turmoil.
We went back to camp and looked at the pictures we had taken and came to the conclusion maybe I had made a mistake, the weather was warming up, things were probably going to slow down a bit until cooler weather came in and what were the odds I would find him again.
Next morning we made a plan for the days hunt. On the way up as we passed by where we had seen him the day before I stopped and told my partner that there was a little meadow behind the ridge he went over and maybe we should give that a quick call first.
Walked into that meadow and there's two cows feeding. Heard a crunch in the timber and I'll be damned if the same bull (I could tell since I watched those fronts for 15 minutes the day before) doesn't step out in front of me. Not much of a story after that. He walked away straight away from me to about 120yds out. I gave a grunt and he turned enough to to get a quartering away shot. Put one between his last two ribs right up through his lungs and down he went. Then the work started. What could have been 82yds downhill turned into 600yds of thick and nasty.

Sounds like a good experience to me

That is awesome! OIL you do not want 82 yards downhill, you want 600 yards of NASTY!! You said you wanted a story as a goal! Lol! Congrats again. Glad it worked out so well. Those tags are not as  easy to fill as they were 10 years ago, way to get it done.

Congrats on a great bull.
It's not the size of the trophy that make's it a trophy.
