Bethel Youth Muzzleloader
« on: October 05, 2020, 09:54:44 AM »
Any tips for a new hunter to the bethel unit. I have hunted the colockum mostly but they took the youth cow tags away so I put my son in for this unit. Its his last opportunity for a youth hunt. Any ideas. We have seen a few elk but not long enough to get a shot. Where should I be looking midday.

He's not wrong.  Bethel usually has lots of hunters in it.  Away from the easy roads is the best place to be.

Gary
One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

Some of my best spots are right off the road.
If I was hunting midday I would look for the thickest bedding areas
I could find. When you bump them you will have to be quick on
the tigger if they offer you a shot. My opinion is they hold all the cards midday.
This also has been a tough season weather wise.
Good luck.

not trying to put words in anyone's mouth but I think what the reference to is most people hunt the obvious feeding locations first and last lights.  I think they are referring to hunting the thick bedding areas during mid day--make sure to keep the wind in your face

I'd tell him to stick it at the captain obvious comment.  Hopefully his son turns out to be more respectful then him.  He was giving you A good suggestion to a person that put in for a unit he knows nothing about.

I want to thank all of the positive help I got. I will be honest that stay off green dot roads was irritating. Look at it from my perspective, if you ask for help and some one says stay off the roads,, wouldn't you be irritated.  Thats like calling me a road hunter without knowing who I am.. I hunt the colockum so I am used to green dot. Staying off the roads is rather obvious. I got some really good personal direct messages and called those who gave me the time.  Its hard hunting with no weather. 2020 is a difficult year. There is elk there but they are moving only at night.

I feel you. I would’ve been in the same boat If my son had drawn. Always had put him in for Colockum until it disappeared this year. Sucks the first opportunities they take are from the youth. If they were smart they would’ve left it at one tag like the cow moose just to be a money generator for them. If it makes you feel any better the elk haven’t been up and moving at all during the day up in the colockum either. Good luck and I hope you guys can fill that tag
