2020 Nooksack success?
« on: October 06, 2020, 06:48:17 AM »
So I drew the Nooksack archery tag. Terrible timing for me personally. I was to busy to do this justice. I did spend some time in early archery hunting. With no success. From what I saw it seems like the unit has a serious lack of elk. So I’ve been watching the forum to see how many others had success this year, or if they had a similar or better experience. I was thinking maybe the muzzy guys would have some better success. As of know I only know of one bull taken in the unit. So please share your experience or success. Lets see some bulls. Pics appreciated.

My wife drew the rifle tag.  We spent the weekend hunting and didn't see much.  Seen a few cows and very little sign.  But we will be hitting it hard every chance we get.  My wife is a school teacher so weekends are our best option. She is going to be taking a few Fridays and Mondays off this month.  If any one has any advice please pm me.  She has never killed a elk before but is a good shot and she is in good shape to hike.  I may have put to much pressure on her to kill a bigger bull than the ones I have on the wall. Opps!   Now I may need some help, I guess the pressure is on me to find her one.  Thanks in advance for any info.

Might have to get deeper into the timber.  The tribes have been working the unit over good.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

The elk are there.... just in certain pockets. They don't use every drainage or ridge that look like good habitat, only some of them. With how think the timber and brush is it can take a lot of time to find them. Especially if you are looking within an easy pack distance from a road.

Had a great hunt in there this year.  We hunted hard for 9 days.  My wife is the one with the tag and she is a school teacher so weekends were are only option.  We hunted hard hiked lots seen lots of elk.  She had 2 chances at really nice bulls and missed the shots.  She has never killed a elk before and she got a little excited.  The first one was about a 300 inch 6x6 and the second was a huge 6x6 probably close to 330.  She passed on several small bulls and spikes .  We seen 7 bulls total.  On the last weekend of the October season we spotted a bull about 2 miles away about 2 hrs before dark.  We took off after them.  It was the same heard we had seen the weekend before the heard with the big bull in it.  We got to 600 yrds and could see the big bull and cows.  We closed the distance to 200 yrds and the big bull was no where to be found. With only a half hr left of daylight and not knowing what the late season would bring she decided she would shoot the 5 pt that was right in front of her.  She made a great shot the bull dropped in his tracks.  Then of course all hell broke lose and elk ran everywhere.  And the big bull stepped out and looked at us.  Oh well we had a great hunt, she is happy with her first bull.  I want thank the help I got off of here.  A big thanks for Urdahlcamp for pointing us in the right direction.
