Question on thermal scopes

No. You get a thermal image during the day just like the one at night.

So can they be used at 100 -200 yds in the day light or are they useless in the day

It sees heat, not light or dark, so its the same other than sunlight warms everything up more so you'll see less contrast than you would on a cold winter night.  Thermal works best on cold dark nights, more thermal contrast.

The one I used in the Army was good out to 1,500 - 2,000 yards. It was an AN/TVS-2B for crew served weapons, had mounts for M2's and my Vulcan at the time. You could not keep seeing through the scope when firing tracers it would light up the screen, just like looking into the sun.

I sighted in my thermal scope during the day. Used hand warmer taped to the target backer. It worked good. I have not shot any coyotes long distance with it. Longest was about 115 yards.

You can cut a cheap thermal blanket into ribbons and tape crosshairs over a dark target in the daylight, the ribbons would sheild the solar heat.

You could also use black electrical tape on a white board, the black tape would get hotter in the sunlight, the reverse of the thermal blanket ribbons idea.

Just need thermal contrast, blow torch something metallic and poke it in the cardboard...spent shell casings, million ways!
