Who knows cougars
« on: October 17, 2020, 08:07:54 PM »
Today while deer hunting (west side ) I happened upon a cougar and wasn’t able to get a shot off before it slipped off the road (gated road)and into thick cover. What are the chances of seeing it again in the same area? Any suggestions for upping those odds. I really don’t want it hammering the deer in this area

Borrow a FoxPro if you do not have one, place the speaker 20 yards away from you where you have good line of sight turn on fawn bleat or rabbit squeal, and watch you six, LOL.

They have huge home ranges.  Could still be there for a while, particularly if it has a cache, or could be miles away.  As for who knows cougars, id say wacoyotehunter knows as much about them as anybody out there.

It depends on so many things, but likely it’ll be a local. Like bango said, if it’s denning or on a kill there’s some hanging around time possible. Local is relative though, could be miles away the next day.

Worth trying, but it’s a guess!

There are lots of factors as stated.  Even it’s gender.  Might be back tomorrow or two weeks from now.  You never know

You should have followed it right away.  There's a decent chance that it's still there, especially if it has a kill nearby.  It's worth a shot to get the caller out and try.

Lol- I follow them around quite a bit, but there are probably others here that have more experience hunting them without dogs.  I have learned that they do not care at all about a person walking through the woods.  They will let you walk right past them at VERY close distances...

Thanks for all the reply’s. The place it went was pretty impassable for a human with a lot of blowdown and very thick brush. I didn’t see any way to get a look at it at all. I do plan to keep trying though

You describe a typical denning area! Or just a bed, you never know. And you'll never hear them in there... it's almost impossible... but they go silent!

Check the Call-in Story Page on my website... might get some insights.

I have a lot of experience. To bring them in close, buy them a dry martini or a c*censored*nay (someone had to do it). You're welcome!

My experience with cougars is as mentioned above.. You have to ease up to them.. They have experience and not all are ready to pounce on their kill... Sometimes they have to be coaxed out of cover. The fur may be dusty from their elusiveness, but they are always primed up with enough aggression that it'll make you drop your drawers. If you go to Florida though and find yourself a puma, they may bait you in if you are younger, fit and have tattoos...Some say they will even let you live with them at first by their pool...But it's a trap. Dangerous game comes with dangerous consequences.

In this context, it may be warranted!  :chuckle:
