45-70 loads
« on: November 18, 2020, 07:02:19 AM »
I recently received a Thompson center encore frame rifle, I ended up ordering a 45-70 barrel for it. I have always loved the 45-70. I also ordered brass, dies and some 325 ftx hornady bullets for it. I am just looking to see what you guys have for load data for the 45-70. I’m not really looking for low pressure loads, not to concerned with recoil of the rifle either.
So what do you guys got for the old cartridge? I have seen some load data for h335, imr3031, h4198 and imr4198. Out of those powders the only one I have is h335.but could get my hands on other powders if I need to.
Thanks

My favorite "flat-shooting" load is a 350 gr JHP or JSP to near 2,000 fps.  It's usable to about 175-200 yards with open sights.  I think I used IMR4198 when I loaded up a bunch.

I will have to look and see if I can get ahold of some imr4198. Right at 2000 FPS is we’re I want to be. Figured out of a 24 inch barrel shouldn’t be too hard to do.

I use 48.6gr of H4198 which is supposed to be about 2050fps. I have not verified velocity yet.

When I was researching I also found:
The Hornady factory FTX load is supposed to be 49.5gr of H4198, but I cannot confirm.

IMR I have two loads written down, 47.5 and 46.7, but have not tried them.

Reloader 7 I found a starting load of 43.2 and a max of 51.5. Post said that 48.1gr had exactly 2000fps for XLR.
51gr was giving another poster 2070fps in a 1895GS and another 51.8gr for 2000fps (no weapon listed).

Disclamer: I cannot vouch for any load other than the 48.6 of H4198, which I have fired from a Rossi Rio Grande. I did not see any high pressure issues.

im sending a 350g Hornady fp or rp out of my guide gun at 1850fps. its a stout load of h4198, don't have my notes here in front of me so don't want to list the exact load.

I tried some loads with 3031 and h335. I liked the H4198 much better with the 350's. super consistent powder.

Yes, I recall the loads being stout in my guide gun.
