Swakane Ram
« on: November 08, 2020, 06:15:38 PM »
So this is a little late but still wanted to share. This was my buddies tag not mine. He took this ram on day 3 after he kicked our butts the previous 2 days. We had him in the scope at 190yds on opening day but rams were crowded in on him and they spooked w/out a shot. We re acquired him across a massive ravine but it was too far for a good shot (600+yds.) We found him two canyons south on day 2 and made a move on him in the afternoon. We worked in on where he had been but he vanished. We thought he must have spooked again and began retreating the looong way up hill back to the truck only to turn around and see him standing exactly where my buddy and our other partner had worked in to from about a 1000yds back up the spine. It was late in the day so we decided to back off and hopefully he would stick around there. He did and we quickly acquired him early AM on day 3. We made the same stalk as day 2 but this time he was in view the whole time. My buddy and our other partner worked in to 220yds. The ram new something was amiss, he stood like a statue starring at my buddy head on on top of the big spine we were on. My buddy had to belly crawl in to position for a good rest and to stay out of sight of the ram. He eventually got settled and on target and was able to drop the ram with a front on shot. He bulldozed forward and managed to stand back up where he took a follow up shot which put him down for good. I don't know the official score yet as the ram is at the taxi but he should be in the low 170's. He is basically the biggest ram we saw throughout the hunt.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to members here:

Awesome ram.  Looks like you guys were in there with heavy smoke. Tough conditions

Opening day we hunted bottom to top, 1500+ vertical feet in a 1/2 mi at dawn! That was fun! The pic with the reflector tower is opening day. Days 2 & 3 we hunted from the top down off Birch Mt. Rd. We packed the ram down to the hiway and got  lift back to our trucks.

Yes! The smoke posed some significant problems for glassing at times. It was in and out daily. At times, if the sheep weren't in the open and obvious you didn't have a chance to pick them out through the smoke.
