Looking into new Scope for my .300
« on: November 13, 2020, 11:49:45 AM »
Currently shooting a 4.5-14x40 VX-3 on my Tikka T3-Lite .300 Win Mag. Blued Barrel With Muzzle Break. I need to upgrade my scope next season...I want to be able to feel way more confident shooting further, and having that closer view for my field of vision when zoomed in at 200 yards plus, is important to me. I don't know what I should look at, I feel like every year I hear about a different scope or new company etc.  Is it worthwhile to pay any more $ for a scope larger than 50MM? I think I have heard about some that are 56-60.

I have no idea on my budget. I'm pretty sure though I don't want to spend over $2500-$3000...Rifle is already lightweight, so not worried too much about weight. If I'm shooting a high quality rifle with high potential for range, I want to make sure I invest in quality glass.
If I'm not selling, I should be hunting, If I'm not hunting, I should quit!

I use a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 x 50and have used it to shoot out to as far as 1800 or so on steel. I really like the scope. The glass is good, the turrets track exactly as they should every time, and it has a solid zero stop. It is also really durable, but heavy. My family members that also shoot distance use Leupold VX-6 HD 4-24 x 52 scopes. They really like theirs and they are lighter than a nightforce. I haven't played with their tracking, but they haven't had any issues with theirs.

If you plan to shoot distance and dial, not reticle holdover shooting, a NF NXS 5.5-22x50 or 56 is always a very solid choice.

Sig Whiskey 5.  Got one a couple of years ago for my 7mm.  Just bought my second one this summer

I’ve got a new in box Nightforce NX8 that i might let go of.  2.5-20x50.  MOAR reticle.  Dandy little scope, but it’s F1 and I’m not sure if I like it.  I think I’m an F2 guy.

Lighter and shorter than NXS.

NX8 2.5-20x50 comparison to an NXS 5.5-22x50.   NX8 is quite a bit shorter and 5-6 ounces lighter.

I have both the F1 and F2 of NX8’s and really like them.  Glass is much better than NXS.   Have a couple Zeiss V6 that are also nice but not quite as durable as NX8.   I wouldn’t trust Leupold VX series if you want repeatable dialing and tracking

This is all great advice and options. I appreciate it. I have been looking at the nightforce series this evening. Just talked to an old friend and he shoots a Burris..He thought it was great..but haven't heard of anyone else owning one.

Nightforce scopes are awesome.  If you don’t want to break the bank, look at their SHV series.   I run 4 of them and have absolutely no complaints.  Very reliable and well made product!!  My next will likely be an NX8.

I ran a Mark6 3-18 with a Horus 58 glass for a few years; EXCELLENT tracking.
You'll never get a Big'un if you keep shooting Little'un's.

:yeah:
I have VX-6 7-42 and Mark V 7-35.   Both good, the Mark V is very nice.   I wouldn’t trust at OIL to the VX -6.

Go SFP unless you have a real reason to do FFP.

Maybe you guys shoot real far, but I’ve never had a hard time shooting out to 400 yards on game with a fixed 6x.  The highest magnification on any of my hunting rifles is 10x.  Most of the time, that scope is turned down between 4x and 6x.
