Drop camp Caribou
« on: November 11, 2020, 10:57:01 AM »
I am wanting to do a drop camp style caribou hunt in 2021 or 2022. Has anyone went on one in the last few years that they would recommend. It seems many areas have seen a decline in the herd numbers.

Lots of good info if you do a search

2021 may not be an option. A lot of companies had to shuffle clients to next year because of Covid cancellations this last season.

My group is booked for 2021 and we just squeezed in. Herds are doing fine for the most part.

Lots of transporters to choose from. Just need to decide on an area. We are going North Slope.

We are finding some good deals on certain aspects but plan on 5-6k. We should be under 5.

Great info.

I received a few PM's of bad experiences to and these are very helpful!

I am hoping to go late enough that they are hard horned, I am assuming this happens in early september.

We went with 40 Mile Air out of Tok in 2016.  I would absolutely recommend them without reservation.  Honestly, if I had the time and money, I'd go with them every year.  When I retire (in about 20 years) if they are still in business, I will book a moose hunt with them.

Here is the thread on the hunt.  I took my son as his high school graduation gift.  We both killed good bulls.  Experience of a lifetime.

I remember reading that story, I think it was a gift from you to him for his senior year. I looked at them, it looks like you have to bring your own gear or rent it somewhere else.

i will re-read this thread.

Thanks

We brought our own gear.  I don't think 40 Mile Air has the option for a camp that is already set up.

Just read your original post Pathfinder, great write up and looked like an awesome trip  My brother and I are trying to plan a caribou trip like this in the next couple years with my dad. This sparked some new drive to get something planned and on the calendar!

Do it!

Might want to look up 40 Mile Air and check some dates.  I think they start taking reservations in early December.  They book up quickly.  If you have hunted with them before, I think you can start calling on 1 Dec.  If you have never hunted with them before, I think you can call around the 10th (if memory serves).  Whatever that day is, call as soon as they open.  I called 20 minutes after they opened and got one of the last caribou slots for 2016.

This is my son's dream for his graduation present. Good thing I have years to plan and save.
