Lot of hunters

Don't know if there are a lot of hunters out of work because of the covid or what it is, but haven't ever seen this many hunters out for the late hunt. Roads around me were a parade of orange and seemed every place they could pull over had a rig in it. Been bad all week but nothing like this weekend. Most just seemed to be cruising the roads, saw the same rigs slow trolling hwy 25 several times.

No joke.  Private land both sides, signs everywhere, and retards road hunting thinking they can cruise a county road, shoot a deer on private from their suv, jump out grab it and bail.  Its ridiculous.  Makes a guy want to get down to business with a baseball bat full of nails.  Where the f are the game wardens?  Oh, i forgot, we spend all of wdfws money on wolf stupidity and studies to determine if cougars are killing deer, no money for enforcement.

Went scouting last Friday for the Nov 20 opener. Usually, on a week day scouting trip this close to the season I will see one other suspected hunter, maybe two. I saw 5 or 6 .

Plan B and maybe plan C may have to be implemented early in the season.

Oh well. I feel like if I know the lay of the land like the back of my hand I can always find my own spot OR use one of those dopey west side guys that doesnt know the unit very well to push one towards me

That being said I've noticed a bad trend that seems to be increasing across all seasons, which is "road hunters" driving ATV's and Dirt Bikes off-trail all over state land and private land like it's a dirt park. I am fairly certain this is against the law/rules on public lands, but a few of these folks have vehemently told me otherwise.

Outdoors in general has seen a huge increase in usage this year - hikers, berry pickers, and hunters.  Ten-fold at some trailheads imo.  Good to see !   Was at a beautiful drive-to USFS campground and lake a few years ago on Labor Day weekend and was one of only 2 camps there - thought what a waste - what was the country coming to?

Happy people are getting off the grid and enjoying the outdoors.

Well, I don't mind the hunters out and about. Just somewhat surprised how many. As usual, have come across two small mule deer bucks shot and left not far off the road. Starting to think maybe you should have to pass a class proving you know the difference between a whitetail and a mule deer before you can go on the late hunt. Guess if they go to an apr on whitetail maybe it will help, seems every year it's just the small Muleys that get shot and left

Love these road hunting bashing threads! Not my thing, but to each his own. I gotta say though, how is it if you're all steep and deep, are you seeing these rigs go back and forth down the roads all day?

Some of us live over here near the roads.  I don't care if they wanna road hunt. Many are older hunters and many seem to have small kids with em. Just wish they'd be more careful about what and where they shoot. Kind of disquieting when you look out your window and see a rig parked with a gun sticking out pointed at your house

You are seeing a ageing hunter base and its either keep the old guys engaged or leave them at home.

I have a couple 77 year old's in my camp. In their day they could out hunt and hike anyone you put up against them. They have killed more game than most of us will ever see. And they fought for their country. Their brain says yes but their body says no.

It benefits everyone in camp and all hunters to keep them engaged. Something breaks they can fix it.

I go out of my way every year to get them to camp. I make a trip west to get them, put up a tent for them and a cot. When I hike up the hill I give them the keys to my truck and the freedom to drive. That got one this year on a doe to fill his permit. And the whole camp helps them get their game out.

Your time is coming. As is mine.

Pretty simple.  When youre not hunting, and youre at home, you see roadhunters cruising county roads of all private land road hunting.  Are you really defending guys road hunting on county roads where all the property is posted?

Completely agree. I don't have a problem with people hunting anyway they can (if its legal) and others using OUR public land. But for those of us that wanna hike behind a gate, or up into somewhere further back, where we don't expect to see anyone unless they work as hard as we do, Its a real buzz kill when a rig comes up behind you on a gated road, or you have motorbikers ripping up ferns or sage off trail on state land. The more people out and about appreciating what sets our country apart from the others the better, as long as it doesn't jeopardize the resource or ruin the experience for others.

Cute story.  I see rigs full of fat scrubs in their 30s  chugging beers driving around locked gates posted non motorized.  Thats the majority of the road hunters i see, not elderly guys that cant get around.  Its not age, its laziness that creates most of them.

Hey Bango...at the risk of my post being flamed out of existence am asking you on a personal level to not use the term retard.  I work with developmentally disabled clients on a daily basis trying to enrich their lives and actually find that term very offensive...as do most members in this community.  I understand your disdain for road "hunters" but just ask in the future you use a different adjective for them.  Thanks...not trying to be the PC police just asking as a fellow hunter

I love road hunters. I never see them. That being said... My brother drew a late mule deer tag this year and we found way more success seeing deer by covering ground than we did hiking. That's a different hunt, and in no way condoning private land cruisers that don't have permission.

Just usually don't see the road guys as much competition. And yes, for some, road hunting is the only option.

I think I have to disagree with you here. I am 100% for getting the youth started hunting and enjoying the outdoors. However I and many others feel like our deer numbers are right on the brink of non recoverable. If we want Washington Department of Fish and Wolves to pay attention to the astounding number of predators and rapidly decreasing number of ungulates, the best way to do it is through lack of license sales. They obviously don’t listen to public opinions of people who actually live in the areas affected, or to everyone in general who enjoys the outdoors.
And yes, I am aware that funds from license and tag sales go into the states general fund, but we are all aware that WDFW knows they amount of license sales per year.

Of course it's not enforced.
Unless of course a criminal shoots from the road itself.

There’s no question that deer numbers are down. I was going to say especially quality bucks, but the lack of DEER across the NE is becoming more and more obvious, too. The data is there, of course. I’ve never road hunted a day in my life but kind of look forward to doing it in my upper years, to be honest. Right now, it’s not for me.

I enjoy public / feel free to hunt opportunities and am more concerned with losing that opportunity and my right to bear arms/hunt (exist) than I am with categorizing or dividing legal hunter groups. Please know that I am not suggesting anyone here has attempted to do that. I stand by my original post but can absolutely appreciate all of the viewpoints… trust me.

As I type, I’m reminded that our Emperor has decided to AGAIN, shut down businesses and initiate tyrannical measures across the State. This sort of thing, like 1639, and what’s to come, is MY focus.

As Sportsmen, we need to police ourselves, especially right now. LEO’s don’t need to be dealing w/ some of the BS mentioned in this thread. They obviously have enough to deal with. The Mountain usually takes care of itself when it comes to violators.
