Another what do you think he'll score thread, Blacktail
« on: November 20, 2020, 12:14:51 AM »
So I have been battling with myself about posting this, but I am like an excited little kid about this buck still and its gotten the better of me. And since he is at the taxi now I dont have access to him. In all reality I dont give a darn about numbers, but I just think it will be cool to know, and if I think it might make B&C minimum... Well then I will have it done officially more or less just so my son can someday tell his hunting buddies that his dad got a B&C buck, hahaha. I remember buddies in high school all bragging about their dad's animals.
I was hunting an "any deer" unit and was committed to shooting the first fork or better I saw. Well, I barely saw enough antler before I shot to know it was at least that. It wasnt till after the shot that I realized how big he was. Opposite of ground shrinkage, 3rd time thats happened to me.
Anyway, the taxi said I would probably be surprised at how much the mass will help the score in my case. All I can remember about that is between the eyeguards and the base it is about the size of my wrist if not a hair bigger. Cause I remember making that comparison several times when I still had it in my hands. Measuring around my wrist that would make his bases at least 7" around. Other than that I have a little bit of memory of the size of things from when I was fondling his rack.... (dont have too much fun with that statement guys, haha)
Based off of all that and these few pictures holding a tape up to it, I have a rough idea of where I think he might land. Gross might break the B&C minimum, but deductions would probably bring it down below it. Especially the difference between the G2s.
But there are a lot of guys on here that are better at this than me.
What do you think he will score? Gross? Net?
No matter the number, I still consider this a blacktail that if I never come close to topping I will never complain. I personally consider this guy a once in a lifetime blacktail for me.
Thanks!

Not having the back fork often  trounces your score.  You generally lose a bunch on the mass measurement, And  you are lacking two major score contributors.   Then the weak back tine follows up with a blow to the chin.  As your number is as only good as your weakest measurement.

I love the mass.   Score isn’t everything.  Cool buck!

I wouldn't be concerned myself about what he scores. Its a very nice buck. Not a book buck but a nice one just the same. People get too wrapped up in scores instead of just being happy with the animal and meat. :twocents:

Eyeguards AND a double throat patch. What a beauty!

Bone is spot on. A 3 point BT or muley that makes BC is going to be an incredible deer. As in he wouldn't look real.  Similar to a 5 point elk.

If throwing out guesses for kicks. I would say 110ish.

Gonna bleed over from a different thread here but the OP didn't ask for anyone's personal beliefs or opinions on the scoring ani.als. he asked what we think his buck will score.

To the OP, congrats on a great buck (for a blacktail :chuckle:).
I'm not really versed on BT head dimensions but id say that buck is somewhere around that 115-118" gross mark. 17" mass a side, 17" mains, 14" spread credit. Right side 1.5, 9, 7.  Left side 1.5, 7, 7.

Ish  :chuckle:

A solid 3x3 with eyeguards will make P&Y minimum all day, but is extremely difficult to make B&C minimum. Usually you need a good 4x4 with eyeguards to make B&C. Regardless it’s an awesome buck that you should be extremely proud of. I will say 110-115”

Understood, I was just mentioning for reference that a rifle hunter should be aware that 3x3 blacktail will almost never make book, for an archery hunter it's more likely. I've taken several 3x3's and 4x3's with archery that gross well but either barely meet the mark or fall short for P&Y.

Closest to book three that I can think of seeing.  I’ve seen three three points that I remember being very memorable.   As much as an eyeball pop pin, jaw dropper this guy is, (yes I know he is a Muley), he probably would still fall short.

Blacktail at 126 and change net, west of I-5. Technically a 4x5 due to eye guards. Minimal deductions.

Step once, look twice...

As for score, an extremely hard thing to do with photos, perception, etc. but I’d hit him a touch over the 100 mark.  Guessing roughly 30 inches of mass, 14 spread credit, 29inches a side.  102 gross.

I have measured very few blackies.
