Alta Late muzzleloader
« on: November 23, 2020, 07:08:50 PM »
My son and I have the late tag this year, wondering if anyone can give me an update on the snow? how deep and how the roads are in the unit. Thanks for your time.

You could get into 12-18 inches of snow from 2000' & up in shades areas. South & west slopes may be less.  More snow upper Methow & less on south end of unit such as Antoine Creek wich once you get past the private the snow gets deep before intersections to Goat Mtn.

I have this tag also.  I’m headed over 11/25 after work.  Start hunting in the morning.  I will be in the south east end of the unit mist of the time.

Thank you for the information it really helped with our prep to know what to bring. The snow is making it difficult to get anywhere.

I was up in Black Canyon this afternoon.  Heavy compact snow.  Got very stuck.  I did see 6 small bucks on a another piece of property in the morning.  So much snow there is no sneaking around!  Not sure what I’m going to do, as I can’t get into any back areas.  Might just drop a small one and go duck hunting.

I wouldn’t do that. You can duck hunt anytime but you won’t have this tag again anytime soon...

Well said  :yeah: it's his tag not yours lol. If he wants to use it on a smaller bucks and meat for the freezer there's no issue with that. Just my  :twocents:

That’s true but some motivation to keep hunting might be helpful to the guy. I regret dumping a meat buck when I had a late tag years ago. Those tags are special.

Keep after it ThatsBait we were able to get in on one this morning that we saw opening morning but couldn't close the gap. Today he went the same way and we were able to get ahead of him and wait.

Dam Nice buck!

To the folks that still have a tag, keep the pressure on!! My logic for a mule deer quality "special permit" is; make a plan/goal of the type of buck you want, research your area to verify your goal is viable, then hunt until that deer type presents itself..finally, try to kill it. If you don't succeed, you still had a great hunt. I've been drawn for 1ea quality deer/elk tag in 23 years now, and ate both tags. Just my opinion..

Everyone's special permit is definitely theirs to do with as they wish! In regards to the "late" season mountain hunters that are battling snow this year; I sure would have traded you my 2019 weather in the Mission unit (rifle/deer) for your 2020 weather! There are workarounds for "too much snow", not so much for butterflies and ladybugs at 5500' during mid/late-Nov, LOL. After 23 years of waiting, I still had a great hunt but some of this current weather sure would have helped out. Life has a way of leveling out though, and I killed a good buck this year, therefore, making up for last year's "tag soup".

It was very nice to meet you and your son today. It was even better to watch the whole thing play out. Was a great stock and a better shot. Congratulations and hope your son has just as good luck as you did.
