GWP Breeders
« on: November 26, 2020, 09:50:23 AM »
The Fiancee saw a GWP and is hooked, which is great for me since I've always wanted one. :) Who are the top breeders on the PNW? I am willing to travel for good breeding, and of course availability. Would love to work with a breeder who is also a top trainer so I can get the pup started of right.

Happy Thanksgiving

I'd Contact Dr. Ray Calkins DVM, he's in Oregon, Portland area. His line of GWP is  prefixed" Cascade". He's had wires for over 40 years and I've hunted with a good number of great dogs from his lines. As far as a trainer goes R.J. Marquart at Quicksilver kennels in Moses lake. Thats 2 directions I'd go myself.

Great information. I will look into both of those, many thanks.

I looked as well, most specifically at the pedigrees, there's quite a bit of Dr Rays Cascade blood in one of their dogs and some in another.

Call Kelly at Bonepoint Kennels. He’s out of Oregon.

Thank you. What kind of hunting do you do with your Garten pup? Have you had other dogs before?

Are you talking about Garten's dogs having the Caulkins blood lines? I emailed Mr. Caulkins and they did not have a 2020 and so their 2021 list is quite long.

I dont have any specific recommendations but I can say that LOTS of GWP owners hunted the WDFW Lake Terrell pheasant release site this year. I dont think I have consistently seen that many in one area.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Shannon thank you. I had looked up Bone Point, and their dogs are nice looking so it is good to hear someone recommend them. Do you have one of their dogs, or have you shoot over any of their dogs?

Secon the Bone point kennels, also look up Dominic Bachman (Bachman Bay Kennels) and Meg Eaton (Wireswest Kennels) all three are in Oregon. All three have amazing dogs. The all hunt waterfowl, chucker, grouse and pheasant. And all of their dog’s are tested and proven. Can’t go wrong with them.

I know there are others out there but when I did my research and called breeders those 3 were the best to talk to and Dominic even took me hunting to see his dogs work. One question you should ask a breeder is “what flaws or traits their dogs have that they are trying to improve?”  If a breeder tells you their dog is perfect, run away, because no dog is perfect.

Good luck on the search, it’s fun.

That's because up here Jim Lallas at Acme Hunt club has had bred and sold wirehair pups for close to 30 years, and again it's no surprise.... The dogs he started with.... we're from Cascade kennels stock.
