It used to always be $12/box for Winchester Power Points at Wal-Mart, but I haven't bought any for at least a year, so the price is probably up from that. But it might be worth checking out.

I have some factory loads at my place that I would be willing to part with for free. I believe they are between 165 and 180 grains. Mostly Remington. Don't know where you are located since you did not put it on your profile but if it is close enough it might be worth your time.

curious?  Why do you want cheap ammo to break in a new barrell?  Granted I understand that you would likely be taking lots of shots and cleaning, but wouldn't you want the brand new barrell to be shot with something you would likely shoot for life?

I am unfamiliar with the concept of "breaking in a new barrel" by putting many rounds through it.   Breaking in a new shooter, perhaps, would use a lot of ammo...

I am not aware of any theory that rifle barrels age (like fine wine?).

Ivar

PS but if you intend to shoot a great deal (whatever the motivation) then reloading is the ticket, and there isn't a cartridge better to reload for than a 30-06.  There are so many options available to the reloader (110gr to 220gr). Not all of them useful, mind you, but at least available.

Looks like it is $18.99/box(20) now :yike:

They do wear in, and wear out. Most rifles used for hunting rarely put that many rounds through it. At a half dozen or so a year.

Since almost all, can't say all as I don't know for sure, 30-06 is copper jacketed in some form or other. Breaking in a new barrel is somewhat important.
Myself I skip shooting it in and use JB Bore Paste to do the majority of work. I smear it all over the bolt also, smooths it right out. It is also good to polish trigger parts with.

I have a few boxes here. Not sure how many rounds total. Send me a PM

Damn!  Thanks for the price check. I knew it would be higher but not that much higher. I'm glad I've got plenty of brass to keep my reloading for a long, long time.

Its called Fire lapping I believe, Basically a new barrel has tiny "burs" along the rifling. These "burs" catch and hold the copper as the bullet shoots down the barrel. So to break in the barrel you shoot 1 round, then clean. Making sure to use a copper removing solvent so the copper doesn't build up on the "bur". What happens is that "bur" gets worn away, therefore not affecting your accuracy.  I don't have the exact procedure in front of me atm. But from the book I read it takes about 150 rounds to properly do this. So the ammo doesn't matter just need something to push down the barrel and smooth it out. Not an expert but thats what I have read, hope this answers some questions.

Buy some bore paste and use that to polish the barrel. Will save a lot of time and money. All you need is a cleaning rod, a big bag of cleaning patches, a can of bore paste and a TV.

Federal makes a decent box ammo that they sell at walmart for 13.97 a box.  Check it out, shot really well.  Better than the Remington or Winchester that was priced 3-4 dollars higher.
