SME spot shot
« on: December 04, 2020, 02:34:34 PM »
So I mentioned this camera for my spotting scope in my hunter ed incentive tag thread or the entiat thread.  Either way I want to give my review.

You can buy this off of Camofire from time to time.  I bought mine off of amazon.  Pretty cheap and super easy to use.  You have to download the app onto you phone.

You get your spotter on your target, lock it down in place really good and then slip this camera over the eyepiece.  There is an adjustment to turn and it tightens down on your eyepiece holding it in place.  Now whatever you see in the spotter shows up on your phone.  From the app there is an icon for taking photos, click and it takes a photo.  There is also an icon for video, click it and it starts to video.  I have an iphone and it saves the photos and videos to the gallery in the app but also to your phone photos at the same time.

The pictures are as clear as the focus of your spotter.  If your spotter is out of focus the photos will be too.

The two problems I had we putting the camera on the eyepiece.  Each time when I would tighten it down I would lose my target even if I had the spotter locked down tight.

The other issue was then finding said target again because you can't look through the camera.  What we found worked best was to hold your phone up to the spotter and then move the spotter while watching the image on your phone.  Having the phone move in unison with the spotter made this much easier than holding the phone off to the side and try to move spotter and watch phone at the same time.

I would go into my photos afterwards and zoom in and save the zoomed in pic.  I will post some app photos and then zoomed in from the app photos in a minute.

I would say that it was definitely worth the money and fun to use.

Interesting. How do you think it compares to the phoneskope?

The phone scope that I had was great but I had to take my case off of my phone. Th e new versions can be ordered to work with your case on your phone.

I would say with the new phoneskopes they are comparable. The one advantage that the SME spot shot does have is you can use it with multiple phones, you just have to download the app.

I just picked one of these up om Amazon for $70 for a Christmas gift for my son.  It does have a few bad reviews online but I figure it's worth a try at that price.  Looks like it worked pretty good for Maggie.

I just built a phoneskope on their website to work with my phone, case and spotter. $95. So spot shot is cheaper and more versatile as it works with multiple phones and optics. Image quality would be interesting to compare. I don’t have the photos from my old phone but that wouldn’t be a fair comparison anyways. My new phone takes way better pics.

Sounds like you guys have the wifi version?

How does the app work, can you shoot stills and video, just video or what?

In addition to hunting, looks like it would be great at the range, I can link it to my Kindle and have it where I can see the screen from my rifle instead of going back and forth between my rifle and spotter to see hits.

Yes wifi version. You download the app on your phone, kindle, iPad whatever.  When you turn on the spot shot it starts transmitting, from you device your attach to the spot shot network.

You can take stills or video

This would be great at the range.
