Gobbling activity

The toms seem to be quieter this year then the years past.There gobbling good on the roost and about the first and the last hour of light, very seldom you can get one to gobble during the middle of the day. Do you guys think that the birds will be gobbling better in the weeks to come? Just behind cause of the long winter!

They were quiet for us too. Not very interested in our calls for the most part.

i think it's too early for them because of the long late winter. we had a jake gobbling at about 9:30 this morning. things will heat up, just hope the birds aren't completey screwed up by alll the hunters in the woods by the time they do heat up.

Must be a local thing.  I thought they've been tearing it up.  Last one I called in was about 2 pm. He came in on the run.  Gobbling the whole way.

Depends on the birds. Some I have been on have been pretty quiet because they still have hens and the hens aren't leaving. The ones that are gobbling a lot are the ones with hens that are leaving midmorning and ones that don't have hens at all. Maybe search for some new birds without hens.

Sure hope it gets better in the weeks to come. I have never had this tough of a time getting a bird.

i hunted the east side again this year and also found them not too talkative.  they would answer my first locate calls but i wouldn't get much more action after that.  had to do more spot and stalk this year.  there was still alot more snow this year compared to last year.

I'm experiencing the same thing... birds are real quiet and henned up.  I tend to think they may be a bit further along than usual.  Lots of times you experience this lull 5 -12 days into the season as the longbeards get their harems all set.  They get into their routines and don't get real talkative until the egg layin is in full swing.  If things were "behind" a week or 2 then I would expect them to be very talkative with more birds being killed since the harems wouldn't have been formed so much.

I've been hearing alot of gobbling the past few days.  Yesterday afternoon I heard at least 5 gobblers in 2 hours.

Again, I think it depends on location. Some birds have harems of hens, others have hens that are leaving between 8 and 9 am...just like normal. What I've noticed is that it isn't an elevation thing, just a quirky turkey thing I guess. If anything, I think it may be a little behind, but barely. I've never noticed a lull in gobbling 5-12 days into the season. Actually, I kill 90% of my birds 5-12 days into the season. Just my experience though.

It's really been a mixed bag so far in our experience!  So much is varying from location to location and day to day.  We hit three different areas in the NE last week and it went from total silence in some areas, to lighting up the hillside with gobbles by running into a flock of 9 gobblers and jakes still running together!  We did our part in busting them up some by harvesting three birds!
