First time turkey hunting with teen son
« on: November 24, 2020, 11:54:00 AM »
So I've been trying to get my son interested in hunting for some time, to no avail. Then surprisingly this last week he tells me he wants to hunt turkeys, starts doing research, etc, and asks if I'll take him.

Problem is, I've never hunted turkeys.

I'm not asking for sure-fire directions to your special spot. I am asking for any tips or pointers that I can research less blindly and more thoroughly, so I can up my chances of putting him on a turkey before 2020 ends. I've read the regs and know what GMUs are open still till year end.

Thanks in advance for any help.

That's awesome and very cool you want to bomb in and give it a go! I don't know much about NE corner or what units but I do know birds are flocking up and moved down, going in blind on public land I would look for valley bottoms with open areas with  feed still available. Be ready to run and gun! Good luck, either way I'm sure it will be the spark he needs!
Just tend your own and live.

My buddy took one east of Colville not to far off the road.   That was the last week of late rifle deer and we had about 5” of snow but melting.  Should be lots of public land next to fields.  I always see them on state land on the north side of hwy 20 in 111.

 :yeah:

Read through the threads here... lots of research can be had.

Fall hunting you can do some calling but a lot of it is pattern hunting. Find the birds and get in front of where they are going.

If you see them in a field knock on the door and ask

They can see super well

Had a successful turkey hunt this weekend for my son. I want to say thanks to member 253Shotgunner for hooking us up with a private land opportunity and pointers on how to go after them. Big THANKS!

I am glad the two of you had a great first turkey hunt! It was a team effort as StovePipeKid gave me the lead that resulted in the awesome hunt that we all enjoyed.
By the way, I was at the store and the farmer was bragging to his family that I was the hunter that bagged four turkeys on his farm. I was embarrassed and proud at the same time. It was a great hunt for sure. -253shotgunner
