Wyoming elk unit 91
« on: December 21, 2020, 08:40:41 AM »
Has anyone hunted unit 91 for elk? Based on 2020 numbers, my old man and I might be able to draw a type one special draw tag but it all depends on the extent of point creep. I like that idea of being able to go there with our bows from like the 8th-15th of september, home for a bit then back for last few days of archery and roll right into rifle October 1st if we still have tags in our pockets.

After the holidays, I plan to call the local biologist but just wanted to reach out here too.

7 points for deer, elk and antelope. I would like to start using them as my dad is getting older and I want to get in as many hunts with him as possible.

You can't draw 91 with 7 points. Last year it was 9 regular and 8.5 special :dunno:

What ever unit you put in for, consider putting the toughest unit to draw as your number one pic! Your number two pic won’t take away all your points, I burned 13 points 2 years ago.  Question for you guys that have managed to figure out Wyoming draws, If I put in as a group leader with 2 points, and my group has zero points, does Wyoming average points like wa?

Yes they average all points in the group. Thats why you see the Points with less than symbol..... <9  that includes from 8.01 to 8.99

thats 2019 not 2020. Gohunt really sucks at updating draw data in a timely fashion. Last year they didn't get current data posted till 2 weeks before apps were due. WY has a very easy to navigate website and they post 2020 draw data damn near the same day as the draw results.

WY averages points.

As for the first and second choice thing, every elk tag goes as a first choice so putting an antlered second choice on your app is a waste of time. Physically impossible to draw a second choice anymore.

You might think about doing antelope instead because with 7 points you can draw a pretty good tag. But 7 points doesn't get you much for deer or elk.

I am not following. Are you saying odds got better in 2020 then 2019?

For sure but elk hunting is more physically demanding so I am wanting to use those while my old man can still get up and down the mountain. At least that is my logic behind trying to find an elk hunt in the next year or two

Find a unit that's guaranteed with 5 or <6 points...

Agreed. Factor in point creep

Not point creep related thought, more of a go in with someone with 3 points  :chuckle:

speaking of wyoming, when did they change the draw results date??  This sucks big time, used to be in feb and now it's may 21, after the deadline to put in for wa.  UUGH, guess I'll just point it this year and wait till my wa points go to zero in another 25 years.....

They changed it a year or two ago. This year we find out results on the 20th of May but you have until May 10th to change your apps

Put in for the hunt you want and can draw  in wyo and plan to hunt it. Even with all of your points in wa odds are still ridiculously low.

And yes, it was changed a few years ago so that the population surveys could he complete and tag numbers set before tue draw. Now you have to apply without knowing actual tag numbers.

This is part of the reason why you will see some units having better draw odds in regular versus special  :twocents:

I only have two points and my buddies have zero, so it’s an easy choice for me, wait till July and buy a point for wy.  In a couple years we will/should get the tag we want.
