Rabbit hunting

Was hiking south east of Monroe area last weekend but never saw any rabbits or any signs of it. Would love to go out with the shotgun during the holidays. Any tips for rabbit hunting in that area (north / south of hwy 2)?

I never have consistent luck on logging roads.  Where I have more luck is thick viney maple groves where you can barely get through them.  I have gotten two snowshoes to pop out with bunny distress also but have always wanted to try it more and never just went exclusively to try it on rabbits.

Struck out on bunnies (hares) today, dunno

Them little suckers were holding tight, tracks all over the place,  but it was a full moon last night and pretty bright all night long.

Had my 9yr old girl handling the tristar 20ga and I was packing the .17hmr

If you really want to get into rabbits, first get a dog.  Nothing moves them out of the brush like a hunting dachshund, beagle, or one of the terrier breeds. Small and nimble enough to push trough the brush.  Better yet, find someone with a good rabbit dog and see how that works for your time in the field.

Here are all the meaty rabbit threads I could find. There's good info in them. I personally had no luck with the early morning, after rain, logging roads etc but will keep at it. A dog is a real commitment so won't be able to go there yet

Well first of all it's a firearm restricted area and almost entirely private.

So you will have to knock on some doors and make friends with someone.

Having a bow or crossbow definitely helps with that.

Gardeners hate rabbits so it shouldn't take long.

I might do a trip over there later in the month.
