Info on Idaho wolf hunting appreciated.

We've hunted Idaho deer the last 5 years.  We've always bought our wolf tags but have never actually seen any or hunted exclusively for them.  I'd like to make a trip over when it opens, probably some time in August and would appreciate any info on helping us bag a wolf or two.  Any areas that are holding a lot of wolves?  Would calling be our best bet then?  Thanks fellas.

I've been watching a lot of videos on YouTube. There is a guy in Montana that seriously has it figured out.
Looks like he mostly uses howls and other vocalizations for locating then he uses different distress calls after he locates them. They sometimes come into just the vocalizations. They are very territorial.
Good luck. I will be in units 6,7 and 9 targeting them for the first time as soon as the snow starts melting off. Really looking forward to it.

6 but especially 7 and 9 would be my starting point. I called one pack in howling then went with old school dying rabbit. Guys up by Bonner’s are doing great with calf moose distress. I haven’t watched that guys channel he probably had more experience but I think howling to locate them distress to bring in. Good luck and post pictures! The one downside to rabbit distress calls is they get played so much by coyote hunters that most animals have heard it a lot. Try a lot of different coyote vocals, especially challenge barks and howls. Wolves are very territorial and absolutely hate coyotes.

  Coyote calls for sure. Most wolves kill all the coyotes so not a lot of coyote hunters overdoing rabbit distress in wolf country at least in north Idaho.

Southern 7/Northern 10 is a place where I've seen them that time of year. Closer to the Montana border. Really get into the back country of the less traveled units such as 10 and may be easier to get a wolf to cooperate and you might not see a soul, especially on the weekdays.

I’ll tell you where I see and hear wolves every time in the mountains. If there’s snow you will see wolf tracks on road almost constantly and non stop for miles. We rode 22 mi one day and there wasn’t a piece not covered in tracks

Hello fowl smacker,
I too am working on hunting wolfs in Idaho, I live in North Spokane.

Here are my tips.

1. Join 4FWM - 35 bucks a year, they headquarters are out of Sandpoint - (if you are a member you can turn in your receipts for reimbursement between 500-1000$ (4FWM.org) based on the GMU.

2. Wolfs have a huge territory - keep at it.
3. Consider getting into trapping

I'm now looking into the purchase of my first snowmobile to be able to hunt them in the winter.
