2021 Oregon Draw Tag Percentages Projections Are Posted
« on: January 25, 2021, 04:09:50 PM »
FYI.  For those looking at applying for Spring Bear in Oregon by the Feb 10 deadline, the guy that manages the annual Draw Tag Percentages website for predicting odds of draw has his 2021 numbers posted now.

https://sites.google.com/site/oregontags/700-series---2021-details

Looks like he has all the species updated now for 2021 draw odds.

Thanks.  If I read the Oregon rules correctly you have to be 12 years old to hunt down there?

12 for big game, unless you sign up for the Mentored youth program then it's 9.  But if the mentored youth hunter bags an animal it counts against the Supervising hunters bag limit...so it's not an individual tag for the "mentored" youth.  So the mentored youth program is not applicable to "youth hunts" tags.

You can start buying points at age 9.

Well I've hunted Oregon every year since 2007.  Hunting was good, so I never put in for special permits.  14 years later, it is too late to start now if you look at the good elk permit hunts for non-res hunters odds are pretty much zero.  I thought WA was bad for resident hunters, Oregon is worse for non-res.  I am double screwed

If you have zero points, then yeah the "big 3" elk units are essentially out of reach in your lifetime as a non-resident.  Each of those hunts has only between 0 and 2 non-resident tags available per year.  And thousands of non-residents holding between 1 and 25 points.

But the other units are still within reach, and there are good OTC units still.

Yes, I will stick with my OTC unit and am happy with that.

With so many bear permits given out, I wonder, is the spring bear hunting as good a hunt as our wa spring hunt?

At a bare minimum it's as good.

I would say it's better. If you are in shape and good at glassing, you can spot 5 to 10 bears a day in the Blues, sometimes more (not counting cubs). If I could this year, I would go down there but too much going on this spring.

What would the total cost for a out of state hunter be to put in for spring bear Oregon?

$172 for the non-resident annual hunting license.  $8 for the application fee for the controlled spring bear tag.  If you draw the tag the tag cost is $16.50.  Oregon sells the predator tags at the same cost to both residents and non-residents.

Since you paid for the license with the application, might as well hunt something else.  A fall bear tag is $16.50, and an additional bear tag is $16.50 beyond that.  A cougar tag is $16.50. A non-resident game bird validation is $44.50 and covers most bird hunting except turkey, which is a separate tag.   The larger expense for Oregon is in the non-resident deer/elk/etc. game tags.
