I was struck by this quote from the article,
"Wolves are now in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and moving outward still,” says Elbroch. “And these are all states that have aggressive mountain lion management. It will be fascinating to see how they decide to alter their management of mountain lions as wolves move into the system."

The first three States he mentions have no hound hunting for cougar so how does anyone come up with such a statement.

Mixed truth, one one hand we know that wolves will get bears out of their dens and kill them, quite sure there isn't much wolves can't or won't kill, it's what they do. I have tracked wolves, cougars where the wolves run the cat off their kills, and in Sun valley Idaho in 2009-2010 there was a story published of a wolf pack killing full grown cougar.

Cougar prey base is getting whittled down at a fairly rapid rate in areas with wolves, so yes wolves do impact cougars in that department also.

On the other hand the article suggest that cougars need protection, when in reality cougars and other predators need to be thinned down to match their prey base. Which as we have seen, will never happen in WA, given the currant governor and WDFake Environmentalist..

Three times over the years I have watched wolves take a deer kill away from cougars. Two of those time were just killed by the cougar, so maybe the cougars are  starving.

I agree, hence more cougar human conflict, cougars driven into local communities in search of prey. WDFW-fake environmentalist propaganda teams like to run with "humans moved into the predators habitat". Not surprising I have heard quite a bit of that garbage from the "new" Methow Valley folks. They lack any knowledge of predator prey base or the lack of. They seem to only regurgitate the talking points of agenda driven drivel.

Management theory isn't to remove or limit the wolves, it's to remove or limit the humans.


Managing predators (by highly paid earth muffin celebrity bios) begins with removing humans from the equation. It's been obvious for years.

  hard to take serious when California has a complete elimination of ANY lion hunting for like 20 years and they call that "aggressive" . I noticed author has written for many "science" publications almost makes me hate the word science after reading these articles.

quit using commons sense! we need to base this on "science" Study 20 wolves kill more than all hunters combined-science says better get rid of the hunters. Its just getting way too irritating to even read anymore

They are not driving down the population they are causing them to form prides for protection. There are more damn lions in Stevens county now than any other time in my life. Just saw another post where there were four crossing the road on highway 231 this morning. I've seen trail cam pics of 8,11 and in one 13 cats. Believe it or not I don't care. The Washington Department of Predator Propagation is doing a bang-up job.

Displaced cats, by wolves or cat over crowding, are pushing into new habitats.  Breaks of the Snake, central desert, neighborhoods with yard deer for just a start.  Do you want your first grader standing at the bus stop these days?  The best answer is probably hounds as a on going study should demonstrate.  Keep the pressure on WDFW.

I got ridiculed a few years back for suggesting kids would need bus stop cages..about now

What a bunch of emotional hogwash! Wolf proof school bus cages? Evidently they weren't worried about cougars or bears, huh? Those animals actually kill children as do dogs quite regularly. Never heard of a wolf proof school bus stop in Alaska or Canada. Those New Mexican kids must be more tasty to wolves.

I don't know if you're married or have kids sitka-blacktail,  but you'd have to pretty solid in your beliefs to send your kids out to the bus in the dark after hearing wolves out side.

In the past 100 years maybe 5 people have been killed in North America by wolves. In the past 10 years more than 250 people have been killed by domestic dogs in America. There has been over 40 million dog bites and over 450,000 requiring emergency room care also in the last 10 years in America.

...and your worried about wolves hurting your kids because you hear one howl.

Makes perfect sense to me...

It's amazing any children are left in Alaskan villages with such a threat looming!
