Wireless Dog Fences
« on: March 02, 2021, 09:52:37 AM »
Anyone use them? If so, what are your thoughts. I have read about the halo dog collar which is GPS based and you simply draw the "fence" and the collar knows the boundary. What is nic about this is I can set up "fences" in different locations, AKA home, family's houses etc.

There also appears to be a less expensive alternative that simply sets a radial distance limit from the transmitter. The drawback with this is you have a transmitter you have to lug around if you want to take it with you.

We have used the Petsafe wireless fence, for the last 4 years, and it does the job. The only drawback is range; the farthest you can set it is 90' from the sending unit. Dogs learn quickly, as it has a warning beep prior to shocking. The batteries, for the collars, last about 2 months or so. We buy them in bulk from Amazon. A nice feature about this system is that you can add as many collars as you want, and you can take the whole system wherever you go. We take it with us camping (if there is electric hookups), set the range to 30', and the dogs never leave your sight.

Very interesting, the petsafe unit is very appealing!

Still interested to hear if anyone has tried a GPS based unit versus proximity. One of the places I have in mind is triangular in shape so a circular window is not generally ideal.

Upon reading some online reviews apparently the only GPS system I was aware of is a piece of junk with horrible battery life. Pet safe looks good!
