goat meat

debating on picking up a goat on craigslist and butchering it. never had "farm goat". i have had antelope which i believe is a goat species.  are goats goood table fare, burger steaks, throw a quarter on the traeger?

We raised Toggenburg goats when I was growing up.  We slaughtered the wethers when they were about 6 months(I think).  I remember the meat as being quite stringy and kind of being an acquired taste.  It is nothing like antelope at all.  Antilocapridae Americana is not a goat and is all alone in the classification and is the best tasting game meat when processed correctly, very tender and mild, unlike domestic goat, tough and stringy.

hmm interesting, im glad you said that, cause i havent seen that online,  i prob will still try it, but im glad to see a honest somewhat negative review of it,  what about sheep meat

Mmmmmmm, lamb.  Been too many years since raised my own. Didn't think kid goat was that bad either.
Economy failure = Too many people spending money they don't have on things they don't need to impress people they don't like.

I would agree with Caseknife.
I raised goats for many years and butchered many of them. The meat seemed similar to deer meat. Very tough too!
I finally got away from them (mostly because they were too noisy and I got tired of listening to them). I ended up replacing them with hair sheep.
I'm never going back to goat. I prefer lamb. I know a lot of folks don't care for lamb but I prefer it over goat meat.

If you  are going to buy a goat to butcher, make sure you have a pressure cooker, at least in my opinion. As others stated, they can be a tough

I'd try a meat goat breed like boer, a properly finished wether, before I'd write off all goats as the same tough stringy meat.

You eat a dairy goat you'll be disappointed, might as well eat a holstein cow and say it wasn't as good as a prime angus steer.

Not a fan of goat meat. Was told I was eating lamb. It was really tough and didn’t care for it. I was told after the fact it was goat. I can cross goat off the list!!!

I always thought it was like a gamey pork chop, even when cooked over good hardwood.  Not terrible, but not something I'd go out of my way for.

:yeah:  Set your self up for success and do what kf said. Dairy vs meat breed, properly finished will most definitely make a difference.
