Kodiak blacktail
« on: February 23, 2021, 02:04:19 PM »
My buddy and I have a trip planned for next September to kodiak (I’d rather go in November but I can’t get the time off of work). Tickets are bought and we’re talking to the island charters. We were wondering if anyone could give us any insight on areas to look at on the map or lakes to land at for the best possible hunt. We’re looking to hunt them in the alpine because they’ll obviously still be in there summer range and bached up. Thank you in advance.

Redundant post removed.  One thread please. Definitely some members here that should provide some insight.

tagging along.  Also interested in going on an early season hunt with my old man (probably Aug 2021 though).  Anyone ever hunt out of one of these USFWS cabins:

Seems like they would be comfortable...though maybe deer populations near popular cabins are locally depleted?

Do you know what float plane company you are going to use out of Kodiak. I would call them and tell them you plans and if they have any suggestions. My friend flew into a high alpine lake and they did quite well on deer.

Highly recommend Island Air. I'd also highly recommend Andrews Air but ive heard they sold since we flew with them? As Air taxi's they legally can't tell you where you should go but they are very skilled in the art of suggestion  :chuckle:

True, Dean Andrew closed up and sold his planes to Island Air, he kept his turbine but is flying it up North now. Willy Fulton Kodiak Air Service who has flown on Kodiak forever for Andrews now has his own Beaver (907) 654-9956. This guy is a legend and knows the island better than anyone but Rolan Ruoss. I have flown all over that island with Willy since he first started and highly recommend him for a deer hunt.

Rolan Ruoss owns Seahawk Air (907) 486-8282 . Another guy I would highly recommend. He has over 25,000 hours flying a Beaver on Kodiak since 1987.

Wiley is who we were originally gonna use. I’ve talked to him once and since then he texted me one and never texted me back. I called him about 3 days ago to set up the dates but still no reply. So I decided to call around and island airs prices are just as good as wileys plus they answer so I think we’re gonna go with them.

I also called seahawk today and talked to a lady there, she said she was going to email me prices and she never did that either.

Used to live on "The Rock".  Willy used to be the guy we called.  After my son was born, I chartered him to fly me back out to the boat, and he landed in some slop that most folks wouldn't have taken a boat out in.  He had to land us in the trough, and I thought we were going to dip a wingtip.  He's a phenomenal pilot.

Ya not sure what Rolan has been up too lately but Willy has been in OR for a month as his dad is not doing well right now and he has been hard to get in touch with. I have his wife Jennifer's number if you want it? Rolan and Willy have the most time and are the best but they are also super booked up because they are one plane operations. You probably talked with Jo at Seahawk?

I've flown with seahawk and island air. both were great to deal.On our deer hunt a couple years ago island air went the extra mile to make sure we got out to out spot on the front end of a big storm and we were able to hunt instead of being stuck in town for three days.
I've hunted sept. there and it was really nice , deer did tend to want to hang out a bit higher but not to much diffferent then when i hunted it in october.
