Shotgun slug question
« on: March 15, 2021, 06:49:26 PM »

Can you shoot slugs out of any shotgun or does it require a dedicated shotgun or barrel? I live in a restricted area where high powered rifles are verboten but bows / shotguns are ok. My shotgun is a CZ semi auto with interchangeable chokes. Thx.

Yep you can, I believe it's MOD or less. My dad's old Winchester MDL 37 Full choke worked good.

Get a rifled shotgun barrel - those are good to 200 yards.  Your generic shotgun barrel is limited to 40-50 yards accuracy typically.

Typical Blacktail county here.... seeing one at 50 yards would be a miracle. What choke would you recommend. I have everything from improved cylinder to full. And sights? Gunbarrel ‘em using the front dot?

Shoot a mod choke or imp choke, don’t waste the money on a rifled choke. With a smooth bore shoot some foster type slugs. Don’t waste money on the more expensive ones because they require a rifled barrel for performance. I would say Remington Sluggers, Winchester Super X, Federal Vital shocks or Breneke.  I used to verify out to 100 yards smooth bore with brass bead only. My 870 shot 3” groups at 100 yards which is plenty good for deer.  If you can get a rifled barrel; then try Winchester Partition Golds, Remington Accutips or Hornady FTX rounds. Those all have excellent accuracy. Other options would be Lightfields, Brenenke Rifled or the Hornady Monoflex.

With a smoothbore barrel you want the least amount of choke possible. A front bead will limit your distances to probably 50 yards or less. Good luck.

If you have the ammo, I would start with a MOD and see what it likes the best. My dad just used the front bead and kept them in a paper plate at 35/40 yards. I've seen clamp on sights that look like they would work. Also check the receiver on the CZ and see if it has the small dovetails for adding sights. If it dose maybe add a Red Dot, ADE (out of Oregon) makes a decent one for under $100.

Full choke is not recommended for slugs.  Modified choke is ok.  Cylinder bore (no choke) is best for slugs.

Dedicated rifled shotgun barrels can shoot sabbot slugs. (Usually a jacketed .45 cal bullet or similar, in a plastic cup, loaded into the shotgun hull.)

Smoothbore barrels can shoot the 1oz lead slugs with rifled air fins on them (standard lead shotgun slugs).  For these, use choke recommendation above.

Under 50 yards 00 buck shot is deadly on deer too. Like turkey loads you should pattern em.

If you are hunting the islands I think a smoothbore is better for versatility.

I like having buckshot for thick areas and you can carry birdshot for rabbits.

You should be able to get to 75 yards with smoothbore slugs and some practice.

I can get 00 to 50 but it takes some tweaking.

I shoot slugs out of a dedicated smooth bore that's a modified choke with pretty good results. I've always heard over the years that it's not advised to shoot slugs out of a barrel with interchangeable chokes but I wouldn't consider any of them experts.  Good luck.

Have a buddy that ‘hunted’ the islands maybe 10 years ago? Season was open so he drove over to scout and had his kids (both hunters) with him. Pulled up in an open to hunting’ spot and got out. 5 deer were 25 yards away from him. He pulled his bow out of the truck and told his kids to ‘pick one’. Dropped it, put it in the truck and took the ferry home. Apparently people feed them enough they are pretty tame.

You want to shoot a rifled slug out of a smooth bore barrel and then the Sabot slugs out of a rifled barrel. One of the best purchases I made was a aftermarket rifled cantilever barrel for my 870 12ga Shotgun. We have killed deer out to 165 yards with this gun. I have since purchased a Savage 220 Rifled Slug gun for this upcoming season.
If finding slugs is an issue I would suggest grabbing a Muzzleloader with a scope and using that in the restricted areas as this is what my buddy and his wife use with great success.
