Neighborhood Rabbits
« on: February 23, 2021, 04:09:04 PM »
Not exactly the “trapping” that was intended on here but I’ve got some neighborhood rabbits giving me a run for my money.  I’m trying to live trap them to get them back to the person who lost them.  Any tips on bait?  They come within 10 yards of the thing and have zero interest

Are you using a cage style live trap or an actual wood style box trap?  I bait my wood box traps with apples usually and catch plenty of rabbits.  I asked about the style of trap as I've never had great luck with cage style traps for rabbits.

Yep, just a standard one door cage.  Well shoot.  I’ll try apples for a bit and if that doesn’t do it I’ll have to consider building a box trap

If they're domestic rabbits like it sounds like, ours do the happy dance for grass hay and carrot tops. Greatest thing to happen to them as far as they're concerned would be a hand full of hay. That or get a bowl of the feed that the people fed them and stick it in the trap. Ours are very reluctant to eat something they're not familiar with.

I'll add that my kids rabbits are show rabbits and they're fed a pretty specific regimen with no junk food so they may just be hesitant to eat lots of stuff because they don't normally get it.

I hear that ACME haa some great rabbit catching products.  Or was that Roadrunner catching products?

If it was me, i would set out a smorgasbord of options- the golden corral of live traps.  Might be faster than trying single items one at a time.

You know who sent them loose?

Yep

Domestic rabbits pose a huge problem when they get loose or when they’re set loose. They spread disease and pose a big health risk. They breed at unbelievable rates. They’re destructive. I’d kill them all. I definitely wouldn’t give them back to someone who turned them loose on purpose. If they escaped and the owners are actively trying to retrieve them, that’s another story. Otherwise a pellet gun or an arrow run through them would serve them better.

I agree with the cull method. Might sound a little brutal but could a dog be used to cull.....?

I may not have been totally forthcoming about my intentions

We have a ton in my neighborhood, I think someone let some go awhile ago and they are just reproducing. The owls get a lot of them in the spring and then the population raises again by fall ...  I’ve thought of killing them Myself.

I'm looking at 1 right now and don't wanna shoot it till tomorrow night so I can use it as somewhat fresh bait for my bobcat traps for Friday night.  We have a ton of rabbits in my neighborhood and sometimes I go on killing sprees to knock the population down a bit.  The neighbors will comment how nice it is that there's not so many rabbits lately.  I just snicker and keep my mouth shut.
