Potholes wasteways
« on: February 25, 2021, 09:02:49 AM »
Anybody been over to Potholes to fish the wasteways for trout? I'm hoping to head over within the next couple weeks to hit the lower Frenchman's area for rainbows, just wondering if anyone has fished that before or would be willing to give me some pointers...

When you say wasteways do you mean running water?

I havn't done it in years but dad and i used to troll along medicare beach and in Lind Coulee during the winter. Did alright. Used to be lots of folks would line medicare beach on shore, dont seem to notice that anymore.

Do they still raise trout in the net pens at Mar Don?

As of last Sunday they hadn't started to release any water out of the reservoir into Soda. Wouldn't be surprised if that doesnt start next Monday as irrigation should be to the southern basin by oooooooh, March 23rd Id say.

Wanttohuntmore - the wasteways are irrigation runoff that flows back into the various impoundments in the Columbia Basin - Potholes has three, Frenchman Hills, Winchester, and Lind Coulee. Crab Creek also flows in out of Moses.

I've fished the main lake for trout quite a bit, but  I know that they will head up into the wasteways to spawn in the spring, was hoping to go tie into a few for some C&R action.

So the moving water sections.   I've never fished them but always wondered how many fish were in them while hunting next to them.   Might have to bring the fly rod and give it a shot.   Always heard crab creek fished well in places.

There for sure some spots better than others but I have caught Trout and Walleye where others said they were not. Lot's of Bass too.
My brother in law told me about his secret Potholes 'honey hole' that I quickly figured out I had been fishing for many years. A week later I came around the bend to it in my boat to see 6 boats in his 'secret honey hole'. Got a kick out of that...
