I learned this by accident, but I guarantee you I will never by another vehicle in Washington. My wife went to visit family out of state and ended buying a new vehicle. She drove back to WA with the temp tag awaiting paperwork. Long story short, the dealership screwed up the paperwork so we ended up exchanging papers via mail for about 45 days until it got straightened out. Then COVID hit and it was near impossible to get to the DMV. Our thirty day tag expired and we went something like 110 days before registering. Fully expecting to have to pony up about 9K in taxes on the vehicle I was more than a little shocked when they told me that since my vehicle was registered out of state for more than 90 days I didn't owe any taxes. I talked to a buddy of mine about the potential fines if caught running on an expired out of state temp tag, and was told it was max a 200 dollar fine and no points. Consequently I will never buy a WA vehicle and pay taxes on it.
