Three
« on: March 07, 2021, 07:20:00 AM »
I killed a three like this back in the 80s.    I spotted him from the road coming home from High School one evening.  You know, back when your rifle sat in the gunrack in your truck out in the school parking lot.    He was a long ways away with about 15 doe.  There was already about a foot of snow on the ground.   I closed the distance.  They watched me for a long time, but I approached without triggering any alarms.   When out of sight, I crept like a coyote low to the ground and popped up over the rise.   The buck wasnt there.   I didnt want to move as I knew it would trigger the doe.  I glassed real close with the ole 40 dollar Bushnells.   I spotted his antler tips.   I had to make a decision, as It was almost dark. I'm sure I was pressing legal hunting hours.   He made the decision for me. He stood up on his own and the 25-06 took it from there.  A quick heart shot and he was down.   No photos, no hoorrah.  Meat for the family freezer.   Thats how it was in those days.   I still have the antlers though to my family that wasnt a big thing.

This buck wasnt him obviously, though they could be twins.   I was just looking through photos this morning from this last fall, and it triggered memories of a happier time.

Thanks for sharing, simpler times indeed. I would love to see pictures of the 1980’s buck’s rack too.

Great story bone, happy times for sure, different times for sure. I remember a fella I knew who drove a pop truck in the valley back in the day, can't tell you how many pictures I seen of him in the back of his truck with a big buck next to pallets of pop, during hunting season he always had his rifle and a box of shells in the cab. He would park and lock up his truck and go right off the roads aways. Yep, a different time.
