A new Caliber for me
« on: March 19, 2021, 10:08:35 AM »
7.62x54R

Looks like I might be getting a new old rifle.   A Russian Mosin-Nagant.     Pretty excited.   I wonder how hard it is to find ammo for.

That was the first high powered rifle I ever owned. Christmas present when I was 10 I think. The one I had (brother has it now) was the shorter version. There are some long ones out there. I still think it's a fun gun. Friends and I would go out LT Murray and shoot it long distance using the adjustable rear sight. Surprisingly accurate hitting a plastic barrel off in the distance. Good luck with ammo. When we bought it we found a bunch of surplus ammo still rapped in paper and tied with twine it shot pretty well actually. Not sure on ammo now though.

I saw some recently when looking for 8mm Mauser ammo.  Mostly steel case and Berden primed If I recall.

Sir,
I'd look at Sarco and Samco online. They are huge importers of this stuff.

I bought one a few years ago from J.C. Penney's or Montgomery Ward (one of them).... it was $9.95 and came out from a grab barrel.  Try to guess how long ago that was.

Gun shows usually have that ammo.  A guy I know uses it in a Dragunov and would get the ammo for it at shows.

A guy can usually find the Wolf brand non-corrosive ammo around. Fun old rifles, but pay attention if you try and shoot round nose lead tip ammo, it tends to stuff the bullet into the lands on them rifles.

.311 is an odd size when trying to reload as well.

Sweet
Got one myself m44 shorter one.
Ammo don't really know where to get it.
+1 on non corrosive.
I shot some surplus ,didn't know back then you have to clean
Cleaned it a few months later had rust in the bore.
Got it scrub out.but it mainly sits any more.
I take a patch and put motor oil on it .Every year just to keep the bore well seasoned.

Try to find PPU (Prvi Partizan) ammo, good ammo and reloadable. My PPU brass is holding up better than NORMA to feed my 9.3X62.

don’t I know that, I have a cz 527 in 7.62x39 with a .311 bore. Funny thing is, it shoots as well or better with .308 bullets as it does with .310 or .311. Lots of conventional wisdom goes out the door reloading for that gun.

I have heard that some of the Finnish mosins had .308 bores. I would slug the barrel to see what you have.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Future son in law picked me up two boxes of Tulammo FMJ non corrosive.    I was trying to decide between the wolf ammo and the Prvi.   The wolf could be used for hunting, 200 grain soft point.   The Prvi is FMJ.

Funny that there are options, unlike say regular ammo right now. Lol

First buck early 70's

From the era where it could have been a $9.95 rifle also.   Did you find hunting ammo for it or use side cutters to cut the nose off the fmj.
