What Have YOU Bought This Year?
« on: March 19, 2021, 09:31:02 PM »
Spring turkey is fastly approaching. As all seasoned hunters know that means it's time to pull out the vest, again, and prep your equipment for the pending hunt. This also means it's time to buy more hunting stuff we don't really need. In my quest to fill the second pot call pocket on my vest I ended up ordering all the stuff to make two instead. And since you can never have too many calls, I am completely justified in my decision.

I ended up with a blasted copper over Pennsylvania slate in a double sided zebrawood pot, and Virginia green slate over glass in a single sided Padauk pot. Both have two coats of clear waterproof finish and I'm happy with how they turned out. I might have to do some one piece strikers next year because I only have four stores bought ones.

So what has everyone else managed to buy this year for the turkey woods?

Those look great. Were those kits or from scratch? I ended up buying another fairly expensive slate to go with the 15 I have, and I'm still not satisfied with any or the 30 strikers. I've come to the conclusion that it's got to be the operator. Thank God for diaphrams.

I bought the two pots rough cut and assembled them with my choice of surfaces. It was very relaxing getting them together. It's just inexpensive enough I'll have to do it again. I also plan to make one that matches the custom fan mount I'll make for my Dad when he finally gets a spring gobbler.

I've had to talk myself out of the stake out blind each year because my dad has a full blind. I hunt solo mostly and don't think I can resist for more than another year or so.

Since there was no nationals this year in Nashville this year was pretty inexpensive.  I bought a set of Phelps/Meateater diaphragm calls.  Diaphragm is my goto call

What cuts did you get on the diaphragms Russ? Anything exotic like a ninja scorpion V cut?

You need a striker made from rutland dymondwood. Striker material and condition is half or more of the equation when it comes to pot calls. The rutland factory burned down years ago but there are several callmakers who still had a stash and are turning great strikers. This particular laminate is head and shoulders above the rest and grips the playing surface like no other. Obsession custom calls and John Sinclair custom calls both make a great true rutland dymondwood stiker.

Every year I buy a few custom pot calls from John Sinclair Custom calls out of PA. So far this year a blue mahoe red slate/glass, claro walnut gray slate/glass, ziricote green slate/stainless, and ziricote gray slate/stainless. They are a work of art and they kill birds for me. Coolest part is you can pick virtually any surface/soundboard/wood combination you like or choose from one of many prebuilt calls with soundfiles. Definitely didn't need any more calls as I own around 30 or so but its a fun spring ritual to bridge the gap from waterfowl to turkey season!

Honestly it is the new Jake Break,  Latvian Eagle and Loud and Clear.  The Latvian is heavier latex triple reed with a chunk cut freaky loud call the rest are similar to what i already have.

Turkeys are so simple I haven’t bought anything specific for them in years. I just get a few boxes of shells every few years and some new diaphragm calls. The Phelps diaphragms are really nice.

I have three pop up blinds too. But the stake out is small enough to get in further and set up fast.

Currently the stake out is across the fireplace until out new insert gets here on the 1 st.

I am with the other guys here.  Usually only thing I pick up is some new Phelps diaphragm calls.  This year picked up a Parrish pack, and so far so good!!

Some new Phelps diaphragm calls. And not dedicated to turkey hunting but I picked up a helinox chair last fall for backpacking camps. I’m going to try it out for turkey.

Nothing for turkeys but 4 cage traps, a new to me bow w/ accessories, a new to me truck, and all without going further in debt so have a serious feel good feeling. Guess it pays to scrimp and save and live within your means.
Still need a newer pack then be done I THINK

I totally agree on the striker. I was hoping you would have thrown in one of those dymondwood strikers a couple years back with all those slates I picked up from you :chuckle:
