Early 70s Model 70 270
« on: March 19, 2021, 09:31:12 PM »
I have the above rifle I've had most of my life. It has great sentimental value. During a move long ago the bolt was lost in the process. I would like to get it up and running again but from what I've seen so far on the interweb finding a replacement bolt isn't going to be easy. Should I take it to a gunsmith and see if they can find one or just keep searching the interweb? If I find one are they just interchangeable or would it need professional  fitted? Am I going to be able to find one reasonable or is it just a lost cause? Any advice would really be appreciated.

Sometimes I see them pop up on Ebay.  Should be able to use a similar bolt in the action, but have to either check spacing or have a gunsmith do it.  If it does need work, the smith might have to take the barrel off or just ream a little.  Since it is post 64, I think a lot of the parted out actions will have the bolt stay with the receiver; but they do pop up solo at times.

Midwest gunworks carries a lot of model 70 parts, but for the entire bolt you may be best off to find a cheap rifle and buy it for the bolt. There are a few different versions of model 70s over the years that may or may not be compatible.

I had been looking for a bolt for a late 90s black shadow to switch from magnum to standard bolt face but just couldnt stomach the $300+ it would cost for a bolt body. Ended up keeping the mag bolt and building with it.

Keep an eye at pawn shops.

Can I get an opinion on this. Looks pretty rough, not sure if this is usable or can be brought back to usable condition.

I wouldnt be too concerned withe the cosmetics of that bolt. It can always be refinished. You cant see the insides however. Model 70 bolts are pretty simple in operation and nothing about that one stands out to me as a concern based on the pics.

It would need to be fit to the rifle action and headspace checked however.
