Westport Jetty??

Hey guys. I think I am going to head to Wesport and try my luck off the jetty tomorrow (Thursday). Anyone ever done this? Good idea? how far out? what baits? what rigs? ocean side or inside? anything would be great. I am headed out on a boat on saturday i just cant wait. thanks again

Hi,  I've been diving on the jetty and I have fished it from a boat.  There are many targets of opportunity there.  If you drop off a few crab pots around half moon bay and back toward the marina you should be able to get a few keepers while you are targeting other  species.  Are you going to be in a boat?  If not get a few crab snares and try them. they work great.  As far as fishing remember that the jetty was set on a sandy bottom.  So if you are after rock fish, black bass or ling cod picture where the jetty would meet the bottom as you go out. Cast so you are working the area at the bottom of the jetty as much as you can.  Of coarse there are quite a few erratic boulders that rolled away from the jetty and they usually hold fish as well.  At the end of the jetty the currents can be quite strong but if you time it correctly you can fish the rock piles off of the end and there are lots of fish holding in there.  Let me know if you would like any other info.

I forgot, I usually use a white or purple worm for casting.  I have found that the plastics for freshwater bass work well too.  a smaller setup with #6 hooks for perch using clam necks will get a mess of them as well.  If you are walking out use your own judgement as to how far.  The boulders are huge and you will be working you and your gear over them so think about a bucket to store things in. If the weather is rough the waves can and will break over the top futher out. That is not a good place to be.  The flip side of the coin is the further out you go the better the fishing. I use the crab snares with a little bait box and stuff the bait box full of herring.  Have fun

Thanks alot. yeah i will be fishing for lings, bass, and whatever else bites the hook. thursday has high slack at 12.45ish. so that should help a bit. i might have to put the pots in also when i am there. good idea. I will be fishing off the rocks tomorrow and a boat on saturday. i think the white plastics is what i am goin to go with. any more information would be great. thanks. i will let ya know how i do.

Bring allot of gear or use a float setup. You can still use the jig too. Just get huge slider floats. This way your jigging up and down and not into the snags.

Otherwise be prepared to snag and lose about everything in a full day.

My father in law just got back from Westport... they pounded on the crab using fishing rod snares out off the seawall walkway. They caught 15 keeper Dungies in 5 hours on Saturday... and another 10 in 3 hours yesterday.

It was pretty slow actually. we spent 6 hours out thursday and caught two. we fished the high and outgoing tide which i think was an obvious mistake. then we went out saturday on a charter and limited on lings however got 25 for 170 on sea bass. one of the worse sea bass trips i have ever been on. but will all that being said, i was not working, i was fishing and thats always a great day. better luck next time.

We have always done best about an hour before until an hour after low using a boat. The crab association dumped about 1000 legal sport crabs in the boat basin for the crab derby thats why the crabbing got better. Looks like nice conditions for this week-end. Sometime get some anchovies from sea food excchange and try them under a slip bobber if they quit on worms.

yeah a buddy of mine went out a couple of weeks ago and fished two hours before low into two hours after low and limited on rock and lings. so yeah i think low is the money ticket. but thats part of learning. thanks to everyone who put in some info. good luck to all. I think i may stick to salmon i am much better at that!
