Youth Weekend - Son's First Bird Ever
« on: April 12, 2021, 10:02:08 AM »
I'm a little late in posting these but wanted to share my son's 1st bird.

Opening morning found us tight up against the birds, and they were already gobbling in the moonlight as we set up in the dark.  They gobbled steadily until sunup and then flew down out of range, about 100 yards out.  We watched them strut for probably an hour with their hens before they made their way onto the neighboring property for the morning.  We decided to pack up, sneak out quietly, and come back in the afternoon when we new the birds would likely return.

Got back that afternoon and set up some decoys then sat down in the blind to wait on the birds to return.  I let out a couple of soft yelps and immediately we heard 2 gobbles to our left.  2 toms stepped out of the tree line about 100 yards to our left and immediately started making their way to our decoys.  We hadn't been set up 5 minutes and they were putting on a show in front of our blind.  My son was set up looking out the left window and they made their way to us so quickly that he wasn't ready when they passed his window.  I told him to calmly and slowly stand up and swing his barrel to the center window in front of us.  He did so and the birds didn't notice.  I told him to take his safety off, aim for the lead bird, and let me know when he was going to shoot.  In very rapid succession I heard "(click) ... now ... (BOOM!)" and saw the lead bird instantly drop.  The other bird jumped and ran just a bit out of range so that he could live to fight another day.

Perfect shot, and his smile says it all.

The 2nd pic was Sunday morning, and I called those 2 toms away from their hens in the background up to where me and my other son were set up (I have twin 10 year olds).  Everything worked out perfectly, up until he got a case of turkey fever and actually missed the shot seconds after I took that pic  :chuckle:  He was pretty upset but composed himself well, we went out again later that day but the birds were pretty on edge after us being in there after them for 2 days.

We're ready to get after it again this week with the general opener.  Good luck to everyone!
