Alaska North Slope ( Please comment)
« on: April 13, 2021, 08:59:58 AM »
See below..

This was sent by our transporter and will greatly impact all north slope hunts. They don't see the need for this and after covid shutdowns some of these transporters will go under without clients this year.

Even if you don't plan on hunting this year,or if you've hunted in the past, maybe take a minute to comment.

The message from out transporter.

Dear Hunters,
On April 9th this release I have attached ,was posted regarding the decision of the Northwest Arctic Subsistence Regional Advisory Board.
They are asking to close Fed public lands in Units 23 and 26A to harvest any caribou and moose by non-Federally qualified users from Aug 1 through Sept 30, 20021.
Per this request that would close down 100% our access to providing hunting for moose or caribou in these units.
Please note in understanding what the board means by “subsistence hunters”.   They are only residents that reside in remote areas as Bettles, Wiseman, Allakaket, etc..  Those that live in larger cities as Fairbanks will not be able to hunt either.  So, Alaska residents are being hurt by this decision also, should it happen.
Your help is needed so please respond to attending or sending in any comment to this board by the dates listed in the attachment.
You can follow the updates by getting on the list to receive updates.

More info.
beat me to it. When you posted the initial link I immediately called Tyler and he sent me the link to this piece he wrote.  Sounds like there's a lot of uproar about this.

Larry Bartlett is adding some good info on Rockslide...he's fired up to say the least. This has the makings of affecting non sustenance hunting up there for years to come.

Due to high demand they are now taking written comments. If you ever plan on hunting Alaska take a minute to comment. This isn't the first area they've tried to shut down and not the first time they've tried to shut down these specific units.

Canned response in the link if you don't want to supply the brain power to type something out.

As you can imagine this whole thing as me pretty spun up. Every response helps.

I used canned response. Easy hope everyone comments. I was flown in a few years ago there was no one else anywhere that we saw. I can’t see how non subsistence hunters could have any impact like zero. That’s been well described already in the articles. Thanks for posting

Yes non rez take less the 5 percent of the harvest most year's with zero proven science based impact on herd migration.  If that passes it's going to be hard to undo, will devistate transporter's that fly into those area's and make booking a caribou hunt in the future near impossible. Since the WA herd is one of the last best opportunities for non rez. Outfits out of Tok and other similar area's will be booked out 4-5 year's at least.

Interesting...my skim of the analysis it appears the recommendation is to only close moose hunting to non-subsistence hunters in Unit 23 (because populations are declining/low).  It would allow caribou hunting to continue as normal.

Ya the analysis and recommendations on page 75 are interesting. Will see if the board follows the recommendations..

There is zero science to support the closures. Just some local "witness" testimony. Even the collar data shows the caribou timing varies year to year by 2-3 weeks up to a month.

This is strictly conflict driven with a mix of greed and dab of hate for non residents.

If anyone is following this got unanimously voted on to defer.  The board acknowledge there is not supportive scientific data... thankfully...at least for this year. They will keep at I'm sure..

At least for now the North slope is open .

Purely a social issue as I've heard it described. Garbage proposal.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

That is great news but is extremely surprising it was unanimous considering some of the groups are pro native.  This was 100% about the subsistence hunters wanting an exclusive hunting club.
