trout for pike bait
« on: April 16, 2021, 12:13:59 PM »
im not referring to this tactic in Washington, in fact i dont even know the legality in Washington on using trout for bait. but in idaho, i heard  of a guy catching some stocker trout and then saying "perfect size for pike bait"  my question is, has anyone done this, do you use a chink of it and set it on the bottom, float it with a bobber, or use the entire trout and "jig" etc.  i really wanna get into some pike this year in cda area

Guys I know catch a hell of a lot of pike with all manner of lures. I wouldn't bother even if it is legal.

From IDFG:
No live swimming bait is legal for use while fishing in Idaho waters.  Non-swimming live bait like worms, nightcrawlers, fly larve (maggots), wax worms, etc. are allowed to be used while fishing.  Live crayfish can only be used for bait if they were captured from the water in which you are fishing.

On the same note, a pike that we caught on Roosevelt a week or so ago had 2 11-12" walleye in it! They were darn near big enough for ME to eat.

We tried it once upon a time when I lived in a different undisclosed state. We had a lake we fished pike in where we’d hammer the smaller ones on lures and could see the bigger ones but couldn’t get them to take anything. Long story short we did just that, caught stocker trout and even kept them alive, never touched a bigger fish on them but they’d swim up and look at it for a long time

I wouldn't even use cut bait.  Northerns want to slam their food.  Not saying it can't be done, but I would just get a trout colored crankbait.  A big one.  The eat prey a third of their length routinely.

Or a white skirted spinnerbait with 2 colorado blades.

Dead smelt are frequently used for pike back east. As far as lures go, I've always done well on white. Usually a white jig and twister tail.
