Headed to Unit 39 Idaho Mule Deer

As is says in the title I’m headed to Idaho again this year. This time in 39. Gonna do some spike camp hunting looking for anybody who has hunted this unit. I’m looking at the queens river area north of Atlanta mainly because it looks to have the least amount of trailheads that allow motorbikes but then again I could be wrong but still looks like good opportunity to get off main roads and trails. Any insight on any experience some of you may have had in the unit would be great.

Deer usually migrate during this hunt with or without snow. So 
If your not seeing deer head south west fast.

Yeah that’s been kind of a controversial topic with most I talk with. A few buddies that I work with that hunt the area do well in the lower areas but they like their camping as much as their hunting. Too hard to carry their wall tent and a case of beer to the top of the hill. Thanks for the info will keep it in mind

I hunted it last year. But it was August not October. Killed a 4x4 but didn't see many deer. I wasn't hunting near Atlanta though so can't help you there.

Most total hunters by about 5000 according to idfg. The new tag structure might help but i have to imagine a lot of that pressure is residents

Yup that’s a fact heaviest hunted unit in the state. Sounds like a circus, should feel like I’m hunting at home I suppose 😂. I’m gonna hit the end of the season hoping for a week maybe more hoping to catch some rut if it happens or a little bit of migration. I’m more or less shooting for having an opportunity at a good buck. From the sounds of it thousands of guys camped along the roadway. It’s a very controversial area guys say they hate it and the other hand guys have PM to say they have hunted the area their whole life and despite the pressure they still come back just gotta put yourself in the right place at the right time. I’m intrigued none the less.  How hard was it to find a spot to throw up a tent for the night anybody? Heard that’s more of a problem than actually finding the deer?

I hunted a spot in 39 in 19. Far north area, saw 4 deer in 5 days. Wolf tracks all around. Used to see lots of deer just hiking in the 5 miles to our spot. Only saw one camp in there usually see lots. That camp had a cow elk permit.

You can camp anywhere there is room. The Middle Fork is the busiest camping area.

I would spend as much time as you can around 7,000 feet or higher.  Spiking out is a good way to do it but often times water is tough to find up high.  Good luck and keep us posted on how your hunt goes.  I will be in unit 43.  Also planning on spiking out a night or two.

I lion hunted down there close to 20 years ago and went up by Atlanta. Just a friendly reminder that there can be a few naked cougars around the hot springs driving up there. One scared the crap out of me 😂 the cougars from town are dangerous! We did happen to find one nice mountain lion but be careful around those hot springs! Have a good hunt I always wanted to try it for deer once I mean can 10 to 15000 hunters all be wrong?

What season? I have never been there for rifle. Archery season I am 1 for 3 deer, although the last season I hunted it I passed a couple good opportunities. Areas with high elk number are heavily trafficked. By simply steering clear of areas with good elk populations I saw no one.

The sheer volume of ground is impressive. Be prepared to cover lots of it with glass and boots to find the pockets.

Going rifle season so I doubt I will get as lucky on the hunting pressure but that’s alright it’s to be expected at this point I suppose. You day hiking or spike camping on your archery hunts?

Yes 39 has sold out, believe all non-res idaho quotas have been met.

We'll be there hopefully on the opener on the 10th and get 7-9 days to hunt. He's got a Peaches Ridge Bull Elk tag now so He'll have to head for that WA hunt that opens on the 25th with a couple scouting days prior. Did want to hunt 39 closer to the end of the month but the special elk permit drawing in WA changed that plan.

Nope you’re not wrong there. As archerykraze said I was thrown a curveball going to have to bend some dates around a bull tag in Washington. Would like to have been there toward the end but just gonna make due with the timeframe I got. As of now I’m gonna plan on the 10th for 7 to 9 days +/- pending my wife serving me with divorce papers over hunting Idaho Washington and Montana back to back to back.

If a trail is listed as no dirt bikes allowed, people in Idaho do not give a crap and will ride their bikes anywhere a bike can go. I doubt Idaho even enforces it. I've hunted 39 before and that was my experience. And I now own a dirt bike lol.
