Drew the ochocco unit in Oregon first year putting in and wasn’t expecting to draw anything and was wondering if anyone had any info on the area for deer hunting

1)  Future reference use this website before deciding how to apply in Oregon:  https://sites.google.com/site/oregontags/100-series---2021-details  .  As Oregon is a preference point state, that site gives you your odds of drawing in the 75% pool, as well as in the random 25% pool.

2)  That tag was 100% draw as 1st choice. Every non-resident that put in as 1st choice drew the tag.   You can log into your ODFW account.  Under "Outcome Reporting" on the Main Page, click on the "Download Controlled Hunt Reports" button and you can download all of the buck applications and see where you were in line for the tag, how many people applied and their application information.

3)  The Ochocos are beautiful.  It's going to be dry this year so focus on water sources.  Thankfully there are plenty of creeks, rivers, and reservoirs in and around that unit.   There will be 437 other archery buck hunters and 648 archery elk hunters in there with you.  There is lots of good access in there. If you prefer a wilderness hunt, the east side of the unit has the Bridge Creek wilderness which is a smaller wilderness but a nice area with some meadows up there.  https://wilderness.net/visit-wilderness/?ID=77

Best advice I can give is to drive down and scout it out and decide what part of the unit you want to focus on.  There are deer throughout the unit.  It's a unit with lots of public land (NF) in the north part of the unit in the mountains.  The south part of the unit is more desert but there is BLM land there in places in the south.

You can also do some searches for Ochoco's on ifish.net (the fishing/hunting forum for Oregon).

I'm partial to the national forest and wilderness areas in the northern half of the unit.  I like the east side of the unit better than the west.  So if it were me I'd focus on that northeast quadrant of the Ochoco with archery.
