Tikka T3 misfires, anyone with similar experience?
« on: April 23, 2009, 01:37:04 AM »
Curious if anyone else has had misfire issues with their T3's.  July 2008 I purchased a new T3 .270 WSM at Sportsman Warehouse in Federal Way.  First time out to the range with handloads it seemed to like everything shot out of it, very forgiving caliber....when it shot.  Numerous misfires, very curious I went back to the drawing board, reviewed every step of handloading I could think of...lost sleep etc, loaded a few more different loads, purchased a box of Winchester Supreme ammo, took it to the range and wammo....misfires with both factories and handloads, I could see the firing pin did not make a deep indentation on misspent primers.  I took the gun and mispent ammo to SW, they sent the gun back to Beretta, a month later I got the rifle back, Beretta fired 3 shots and called it good, said for "customer to use different ammo"...say what??  Are they telling me Winchester factory ammo is not good'nuff to shoot in their rifles?  Store manager asked that I take it to the range again and try it out, I did that, first round went tink...nothing, second round nothing.  I'm fuming mad at this point, called the store manager and he iterated their policy of no gun returns but he understood my frustration and said he'd give me store credit for the value of the rifle, I then exchanged it for a Browning X-bolt in .300 WSM.  Cudo's to the store manager, however my frustration with Beretta has me never wanting another Beretta product as long as I live.  I do have a T3 in 30.06 that I have had for a few years now but since this issue I've taken the scope off and put it in the back slot of my safe, I plan on selling it when I can make it down to the Portland Rose City gun show next.  I'd like to hear if anyone has had similar issues or if mine was one in a thousand.

Thanks,
Caretaker

I would say it had some firing pin issues.  You can see part of it, but not what is going on in the bolt.  Had they not take it for in store credit, you probably would have had to take it in to a gun smith to see if they could fix it.

Sounds like a bad sear or maybe something else in the trigger. Alternately maybe there is something wrong with that particular firing pin.

Could be a headspace issue too...

Could be headspace letting the cartridge slide too far forward.  I would guess striker or striker spring problem or junk in the bolt cavity that the striker travels in.  Not sure a sear would cause that type of problem.  But it seems that they could have easily checked all those.

You should copy this thread and send it to Beretta and show them how expensive it was for them (PR wise) to NOT fix it.  They should have bent over backwards for that kind of problem.  Sounds like they just don't care.  Kudos to the store manager for trying to make it right even to the extent of breaking corporate directives.

Forgot to mention that I did take it to two well known gunsmiths in Covington and Renton, both said the Tikka's are very hard to get parts for and neither could fix it.  Beretta checked the headspace along with other numerous check points, all good.  I believe the bolt had junk in it, maybe too much packing grease and caused intermittent firing pin issues.  One gunsmith checked the spring pressure on the firing pin, said it was good but that could have been the one or two times it did actually work.  It sounds like this is a one off issue with the gun but I still have a sore spot with Beretta.

My son bought a new one 3 years ago.  Missfires all the time.  1st trip to the range it mis fired several times.  Thought we had the problem cured.  Opening morning a big 4 pt mulie walks out. The gun went click.  Luckily the next shell he jacked in fired.  Took it to a local gunsmith who couldn't find the problem on a quick look over.  He hasn't sent it in yet but just got it boxed up to send in.  Reloads seem to fire ok.  Factory bullets don't.  This is a blued/wood stock 270 wsm.

That definately sounds like a headspace problem, I've seen it before... don't let them tell you otherwise.

I had a problem with a Win. 70 I bought new. Pull the trigger click, touch the bolt, BOOM, was going to send it back but 9 11 happened and didn't. I took the bolt a part and recleaned it. When I sprayed the tude holding the end up metal shavings came out onto the paper towel. Repeated it a couple time till clean and never had the problem again. Shavings were getting in the way and causing the fireing pin to hang up. Didn't do it till around 50 though. Cost me an elk the first time it did it :bash:
