Headed out for my first hunt.
« on: April 26, 2021, 07:45:29 PM »
Hey y’all,
Well I’m headed out on my first official turkey hunt tomorrow. I’ve got two full days to hunt. I saw a few turkeys about an hour and a half from my place in seattle a few weeks back (just over the pass) and was thinking about going back to that spot, but I’ve heard the NE corner of the state is where it’s at. I’ve never been up that way and have never hunted turkeys.. would y’all head to a spot you saw a few turkey last week or would it be worth my time making the 5 hour drive to try and get on some birds. I’ll be hunting with my bow so I know my chances are already slim. I’m also new to calling so again, chances seem a little slim, but I’m going anyway. If y’all had two days would you head to the NE corner for best chances at, at least seeing some birds to hunt?

My opinion:   If you want a pleasant hunt, you might try for the close birds.    If you really want to get a bird or two, drive past a couple turkeys (that are likely on private land) and make the trek to the NE corner where the big numbers are.

I've hunted the sparsely populated areas enough to just hop in the truck and drive to the NE.

The numbers don't lie.

Hey Dan-O thanks for the info... that made for an easy decision. Less that 1% harvest in the area I was in. I think I’ll take the long drive.

I hit central washington for the opener this year for the first time trying to cut down travel. Felt like everyone else had the same idea. After three days of stomping around seeing hunters everywhere and few turkey I can say a few hours on the road are easier on the knees then 5 to 10 miles a day on the boots. It sucks but you have a better chance in the NE new then anywhere else. Good luck!

Yeah man, I felt the same way. I went out for a day in that area closer to home and didn’t see a thing. No wildlife at all so I’m sure all the tromping around by everyone wasn’t helping.
Well, looks like I’m headed out in about an hour with a few spots marked on my Onx and we’ll just see what happens. I’ll report back when I get back. Going to make it easy and mobile and just crash in the back of the truck.
