Wenaha Road Report
« on: April 28, 2021, 08:24:57 PM »
Anyone have any road condition reports for trying to access the Wenaha for spring bear? I know Troy is probably the only option this time of year. I was planning to go over Memorial Day weekend and the last week of spring bear because I’m told snow blocks all the access from anywhere but the SE end of the unit, but figured maybe someone would know of a way into the unit I’ve not seen on OnX yet.

 :yeah:
I'd like to know how the FR40 road is out of pomeroy. Can I get through to troy yet? Anyone been up that way? Seems the snow melt is early with warm dry April.

Still too early

not really early. Ive been steelheading the ronde for 30+ years and they had more snow in early April than I have seen in a decade or more

I was in lick creek last weekend and there was still tons of snow. While its been dry, it hasn't been all that warm. Snow is coming off slow.

It's gonna be a late one! Been in the Wenaha (OR side) a couple times, Mt Emily, and Minam this year. You could just barely see the crapper roof at Moss Springs two weeks ago. There's roads directly behind my house where I still can't get a wheeled machine through. These are the years I dream of having a tag...

I'd call the store in Troy. They're good about this kind of info usually. My guess is you'd have to go around.

Hoping someone can comment. Leaving tomorrow from the west side. Planning on driving HWY 12 over then on to Asotin and down 129 to Troy and then back up and in. Any reason I won’t be able to make it to Three Forks area on that route?

I get there Wednesday and staying through Sunday or maybe Monday morning. Headed however far past Three Forks I can get and still find a decent campsite. Will be in a Blue Ram 3500 with a canopy and bull bar.

Sliverslinger, Ekhunter88...I will be in there area this weekend as well checking things out and spending some time behind the glass hopefully.  Any intel you care to share in the meantime of road conditions/snow levels, if possible, would be greatly appreciated.

It loops back around to the 40 rd that eventually goes to pomeroy.  But the snow won’t allow it right now.

exactly, it loops back around.  Been there lots of times.  If he wants to get to the 40 take the grouse flats pomeroy rd.  You may not be able to get to some of it, but you can come from both ends

He was talking about coming up from troy to the threeforks area and beyond (north of).  Not coming south down the 40.  Just a little internet miscommunication.   No way you are making it from Pomeroy to threeforks via 40 right now.

On my way over now - this brings up my other question I’ve been debating. Hold out for something big or shoot the first boar I find?

this bear is far from common,  find what makes you happy.  Color, size, closeness to road!😂. Just have a fun hunt.

Made it to Clearwater lookout on Sunday. Probably could have made it around the snow but not much farther.

If you have never killed a bear, not sure how picky I'd be, just watch out for sow's with cubs they can hide really well.  It's not a gimmie over there, sometimes it takes a bit to find one.  If you are good at telling the difference try to shoot a boar, but it's not that easy, it has taken me years to make a good guess on the sex.  Now I have seen some huge sows and if I hadn't shot the boar chasing one in 17', I'd had been very happy to shoot the sow, she was a monster.  Be patient, sit and glass, keep that wind in your favor.  Be ready at all times, you never know when one will show up.  And take care of the meat, they are good eating.  Good luck man, I'm jealous!

Pretty slow over there right now, know of a couple bears taken but that’s it.  I hiked about 6 miles Friday and ended up watching a bear from 57 yards take a nap (no tag for me).  It was an awesome experience, over an hour I watched him! Bad pic but all I had.

Sent you a Pm. Got to the dry camp at the intersection below Saddle butte. North side of that hill had heavy snow but melting fast.

Anyone know if you can get over Bluewood or any other entrance into Wenaha?
