Stay or move spots
« on: April 28, 2021, 03:47:52 PM »
Went out Sunday of the opener E of Colville and had some limited luck getting response gobbles but not much past 8.  Went out last weekend same general spot and heard no turkeys but did see one Tom twice crossing the road 9:30ish and plenty of “j” poop and feathers and a few that looked like they were left from a successful shot.  Do I work that area again or move to a new area that’s an unknown.
I think pressure was pretty good but not unusually so.  My guess is that kind of quieted them down a bit but not sure how much and how much is just normal late April behavior.
I do find it odd last fall I couldn’t walk 2 feet without jumping a bunch here.   Now actual turkeys are few and far between.
Just turkey sign is plentiful.

Stay in that area.  The seasons vary from year to year when mating begins.  The tom's are henned up or just content with their girls.  About 9-10 the hens will leave the tom's to go nest.  That is when they will be responsive to a little love calling.  If you can't catch them off a roost I would wait till later in the morning right now.  They are coming off the roost gathering up in their flocks and moving on.  Not being vocal.  You sit around where your finding sign the will be back around.  Even when they have been shot at they will come back.  Good luck.

If there are birds in the area....stick with it.  Last two weeks we had gobbles from 0515 till about 0630....then nothing till about 0900 when the gobbling started up again.  All the toms last week in our area were hen'd up and tough to call in.  I imagine the will be looking pretty hard in the coming days and weeks as the hens go to nest.  I found toms with hens last year all the way through mid June.  You just have to find the right bird.

Agreed.

Don't leave birds to find birds.
