HIGH HUNT DUMB QUESTION
« on: March 29, 2026, 01:39:45 PM »
I should know this BUT I don't, high hunt in the cascades is usually the wilderness areas but some how missed the description of each area or there not in the regs.

Where can I find boundary descriptions of each area located in the Cascades that the game dept. accepts?

Just find a map that outlines the wilderness areas you’re interested in.  Or onX or something like that. The boundaries are the wilderness boundaries. Those are federal lines.

Be careful with the boundaries. I was on a trail hiking around in the woods nearby and saw a wooden sign next to a trail that (I thought) identified it as the Buckhorn Wilderness. So in the middle of September, I hiked in several miles and figured that I had gone far enough to be able to drag out a deer and reversed course and a little while later, I encountered a grouse hunter. He advised me that I was nowhere near the high buck area. Still don't know where it is.

Also in the reg’s:

A page dedicated to where to get maps.

The regs note which wilderness areas are open for the High Hunt in the modern firearm deer seasons schedule and direct you to USFS maps for the boundaries. So I would consult the USFS maps for area descriptions/boundaries if worried about it. In reality, I just use OnX.

While I hunted the Pasayten for the first time last year for high buck they had signs on trees where the wilderness boundaries were in the 7 trail heads we tried... My dad has OnX and they seemed to align... I had a paper map... They looked close enough on my end... I've been in other wilderness areas that had sign post or were marked on trees when on trail... But once you get a look at it I think the only confusing one is Lake Chelan Rec Area off trail to me... A lot of straight line boundaries instead of land marks or waterways... Hunting that one without the modern phone is fun... I do it with a map and compass... My dad has OnX to set me straight if I need some guidance when we meet up...  :chuckle:  But I usually do pretty good... He taught me without it... I'll prescout some with it on his phone a little but I still prefer a big paper map that I can get the whole look of when pre scouting and first learning an area...
I love you... I really do...

The reason for trying 7 different trailheads?

The reason for trying 7 different trailheads?

We did day hunts with a camp down lower and moved camp after day 3 to the other side... Tried a new trail everyday... Just to check it out... Just depended on what we felt like doing and what we saw... Had never been there before and I really wanted to... But my dad didn't want to pack in or hike the same trail everyday to the same spot not knowing a thing about the area... So we figured out a little bit... I know one spot I will be back for bear season... One trail no point in hiking at all imo... ect...
I love you... I really do...
