Traditional archery aiming methods

In the off season I tend to shoot my recurve much more,  with the idea that I'll get better and someday elk hunt with it.   For years I just tried flinging arrows at the target,  with ok accuracy but not really huntable.   I switched last summer to three fingers under the nock, and started using a gap method,  and it's a world of difference.   I'm curious what you seasoned trad hunters do?  Thanks!

I am a 3 fingers under guy and gap shoot as well.
Only way I can be accurate to any kinds of a standard I will hunt with.

I am no expert at most anything, but I have started with three under and have been using instinctive.  I won't be hunting with it any time soon.

Funny,  I found that video also after figuring it out over a long time.   Would have saved me lots of time at the range.

I don’t even know what I do, I just do it, so that must make me instinctive.

I'm instinctive, more I practice the better I am. I can get pretty decent out to 25 yards, past that and my arrow starts to drop a bit.

I tried 3 fingers under once, didnt feel right. Sometimes I get off on cantering the bow a bit because I'm consistently shooting left or right. I futz around and think Im doing something right, then the next time that doesnt work.

Someone posted a video a couple years ago showing proper stance. The guy in the video showed the wrong way to stand and the wrong way to have your draw arm....I immediately recognized myself . I was standing on my front foot as if I was completing a football toss. I was also not keeping my draw elbow up, inline with the arrow, if that makes sense. Once I adopted a more square stance and concentrated on keeping my elbow up i was able to add a wee bit to my draw and shoot MUCH MORE CONSISTENTLY.

Of course when you are crouched behind a Sagebrush or Boulder on your knees or butt trying to leverage the bow so as not to dig the bow in the dirt to get a decent shot off on Mr. Muledeer, that all goes out the window. I like to practice in those situations also. Its fun!

Before I started using a bow with cams, pins, string trigger, Anchor sights, carbon arrows, and a host of other things, I shot instinctive, two below and one above. Both stick and recurve bow.

The video was really helpful.  I still don’t know how to use a peep site.  Are you supposed to close one eye?

I had a really beautiful Jim Reynolds Thunder Stick. I tore my shoulder about 8 years ago and had to give up trad. The shoulder has healed but I do miss trad shooting and hunting. If you're an older guy like me, consult a trainer or physical therapist on ways to build up your shoulders to avoid doing this.

Is shooting traditional worse on shoulders than the newer modern bows?  I am currently hunting with a compound so figured a longbow would be fine.  But open to those smarter than me if there is different or worse stress from a longbow.

You're holding back the entire weight while preparing to shoot. Compounds let off most of the weight, as you know. If you have shoulder issues, you should look into a compound or at least consult a pro before spending money on a trad bow.
